  1. Forecasters are warning residents to be prepared for trees toppling and travel disruption in South Lanarkshire with 70 mph winds expected to strike the region.

High winds and heavy rain will reach South Lanarkshire between 3pm and 9pm as the remnants of Hurricane Katia hits Scotland.

ScotRail and Transport Scotland have issued weather warnings for passengers travelling across Lanarkshire and arranged to have extra staff in place as a precaution.

STV's Weather's Sean Batty is warning people in Lanarkshire to expect a rough afternoon and evening.

He said: “I expect the strongest winds will be between 3pm and 9pm in the evening with winds gusting to about 50 or 60mph in North Lanarkshire.

“As you head down further south to South Lanarkshire you will start to see gusts getting up to about 70mph in places, perhaps a little bit more in the higher ground.”

“My main concern is for vehicles either going north to south or south to north along the M74 or M77.

“Because it’s a strong westerly wind it will be coming in from the side so there’s a fairly good chance some high sided vehicles could be toppled by winds of that sort of strength – which is something we’ll have to keep an eye on.”

Sean highlighted that after a week of rain and downpours in the area the risk of trees coming out the ground would be high in South Lanarkshire.

He warned locals the storms would be similar to the high winds and chaos in May.

He added: “People are really scared about the fact that it’s a hurricane but it’s been hyped up an awful lot.

“We would get a few of these types of strong storms a year, the only difference with this one is that it’s a little bit earlier than normal, as we usually see storms like this in October and November.

"Trees are not so much in full leaf in October time so that’s why, particularly today, I think we’ll see a bit more damage."

The Scottish Government Resilience Room (SGoRR) met on Sunday afternoon to discuss how power companies, transport providers and other partner agencies would be preparing for the potential impact of Post-Tropical Storm Katia.

Transport Scotland's Multi Agency Response Team has been activated and extra power and transport staff are being moved in to areas likely to be affected.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: "We are all working hard to keep Scotland moving and I urge everyone to allow extra time for travel, avoid unnecessary risks and keep checking websites and local radio for real-time information.”

Extra staff have also been brought in to ensure ScotRail’s services run smoothly.

A spokeswoman for ScotRail advised customers to check the operator’s website before travelling.

She said: “We are monitoring the situation and, as a precaution, have arranged to have extra staff in place from start of service on Monday.

“In addition, contingency plans are in place for the introduction of temporary timetables, where appropriate, following the Met Office advising that there is the potential for 60 to 70 mph gusts of wind and a risk of disruption to transport due to the possibility of damage to trees and structures.”

  2. the wind and gusts have really died down now sorry.gif .. Is that it for us east midlanders??? (or shall I say Nottingham since Mansfield seems to be getting blown into the next continent) About every 5-10 minutes I get a small gust of 20-30 mph I would guess, but until i see my SOLD signboard in front of my house, launch itself into the Tesco's Express over the road, I will remain fairly dissappointed nonono.gif
