  1. Bonkers indeed .... murky politics and a dirty and dangerous business stealthily creeping forward. Incidentally Osborne's father in law just happens to be a shale gas advocate. http://frack-off.org.uk/osbourne-relative-lunches-polish-frackers/
  2. Are you having a laugh FWD. "Slightly wetter" Come on.. Western uplands have had an awful summer. Already within 10mm of beating the long term average annual rain. Seriously short of sunshine and temps have been depressed. Farming a write off in many parts. Some places on sloping well drained land, specially on limestone or with thin soils, have coped better. Seems to me that the much warmed Atlantic is the major player.
  3. Only 4.1 mm collected at 10am for then previous 24hrs. Bright early this morning. Spent some time trying to remember what should / could be done on a dry day. Then from 11am steady drizzle moved in from the west. Thoroughly wetting. Now though some bits of blue sky emerging. Not much wind. Warmish 11.0C
  4. Remember the BGS undertakes a lot of work for oil and gas companies.
  5. Indeed. Hence the interest in the weeping sore at the BP site. Thankfully probably "no-one" is drinking or using the underground water from there. Unless we have to worry about wild life.
  6. The legacy of Lord John Browne ex BP who was in charge when the disaster occurred. He's now placed in the UK Cabinet at the heart of Government. Also Chair of the Board of Directors of Cuadrilla who are currently licensed to explore for shale gas in Lancs. They soon plan to start unconventional long lateral "fracking" despite the earth tremors caused by very short fracturing off one vertical well earlier this year. Rape the earth and ignore the future.
  7. No TM. You wouldn't want to live in these conditions. Garden written off and rotting. Walls growing green mould and cement being winkled out by rain. Roads and paths turned into rivers and eroded. Mud everywhere. People skulking indoors, or if venturing out are well sheeted up in waterproofs and wellies. Vehicles rusting. Gloom. Still swillling down here. Can hear it roaring from indoors even though the TV is on.
  8. Still roaring down here. Can hear it from indoors.
  9. Why always us? Dreadful wet here. Just posted this in today's NW weather thread -- Horrendous floods now. Rivers all over the fields even where newly cleared drains. . Little ditches running like torrents. The land is so full, it can take no more. Just been out to empty the gauge (6.30pm) in case it would overflow before morning. Had 18.5 mm, most of it in the downpours since 3.30pm. So Oct total so far is 50.3mm Still bucketing down. Looking very black all round.

  11. It could be Nadine's last throw. If she's getting a ride with a friendly low pressure and a fillip with the jet stream she might still manage to send us her 2nd offspring with yet more lashings of rain. Has this embryonic babe got a name yet?
  12. Gloomy and bucketing down great deluges since 3.30pm. Just awful.
  13. Beefy showers earlier with hail. Subdued by late morning. Brief shafts of sunlight lift the temps. Max so far 11.3C. Breezy. Pressure steady. At 10 BST collected 25.2mm rain for previous 24hrs.
  14. Showery today. And since late afternoon rain has been thumping down. A foot of rain in Sept and a yard of rain since the start of June. Dreadful up here in the Lancs hills. And forecast for tomorrow singles us out for more wet horror. Chilly too today. Max temp 12.8C. Ice particles in the raindrops on the car windscreen.
  15. 3 cracks of thunder near here between 7.50 and 8pm this evening Bursts of heavy rain at the same time.
  16. Just read back. Can scarce believe how little rain some folks have had. Country lanes are like rivers round here. The land is sodden. Our Sept total was given a boost by Nadine's child, which brought 99.1 mm. Same kit, same site with EA checks monthly and Met O inspections now and then. For sure we have to accept the weather has become increasingly wet in recent years. And this year is downright dreadful.
  17. We got 312.8 mm for Sept here. The rain on Sunday 30th Sept was 25.9 mm and took us into the "300 club". So that's 12.3 inches approx for Sept. A foot for goodness sake ! It was the record wettest Sept -- beating Sept 2011 the previous record holder. And the 4th wettest month since we started rain recording in 1968. Since the start of June we've had 850.8 mm of rain, (33.5 inches approx). Getting towards a yard!! The average for the same 4 month period is 467.4 mm (18.4 inches). Year's total so far to end of Sept is 1370.7 mm (54 inches approx). Annual average is 1454.8 mm.
  18. Yes, she's still hovering. Soon to find a mate, then looking to cause trouble. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/avnpanel1.html
  19. Rain most of the day. Steady, sometimes heavy. Seemingly no end to it. A couple of days ago, Sept record was broken (since 1968). Expecting we will have reached 300mm by the end of the day (10 BST) tomorrow. That's near enough a foot of water for goodness sake. -- and on the top of the three previously very wet months.
  20. Grim, grey and wet. Nowt fresh really.
  21. Joining with a pal and throwing a huge party in a few days time? http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/avnpanel1.html
  22. Is it a bad omen? Plague and pestilence. When is the Arctic sea ice going to melt completely?
  23. Yes LSD type connection and other ingredients. I'm no chemist though. Medics understand the science now. It's thought ergot could have been the cause of the strange behaviour at Salem. The people unwittingly had been eating ergot infected meal after a poor wet season. Folks were tried, found guilty of witchcraft and executed. see Salem Witch Trials. Still plenty of ergot about here.
  24. Flock of fieldfares`here today Chattering amongst the hawthorn berries. Suspect they are a bit early.
  25. Sept record here has been smashed already. (Sept 2011 was previous record holder with 274.3 mm) Wettest since we started recording daily here start of Sept 1968. Same gauge, same site. Picked up 37.8 mm this morning (10 BST Wed 26th). So now total is 276.6 mm. This current low pressure event has given us 99.1 mm so far since rain started on Sunday evening, 23rd. Thankfully dry at present, though heavy clouds all around.
