Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Snow and Ice

Affecting: All of the UK

Time and Date Valid For: 18:00 Wednesday 23rd February - 18:00 Thursday 24th February 2005.

Time Of Issue: 18.00 Wednesday 23rd February 2005.

The wintry spell continues across the UK, and conditions across many parts look set to take a turn for the worse over the next 12 to 24 hours.

Many places have seen sleet and snow showers during today (Wednesday), but to the east a frontal system is moving westwards towards the UK.

These showers will continue into the night across many central and eastern areas, with an increasing risk of more persistant and prolonged snowfall moving in from the east as the night goes on.

The heaviest snowfall looks set to hit northeast England and eastern England, and especially over higher ground such as the North York Moors. Snowfall amounts generally are expected to be in the range of 3-6cm, but over higher ground and in some localised spots, amounts may exceed 10cm.

Into tomorrow (Thursday) and further snowfall is likely for many parts, however it is expected to gradually die out as the day goes on. The snow may reach as far as the West Midlands, Northwest England and Southeast Scotland during tomorrow.

There is a chance that the snow will turn back to sleet and rain in southeast England before it dies out.

All parts will see a frost overnight, bringing the risk of icy surfaces where snowmelt has occurred or where snow falls.

Roads and pavements will become hazardous so please take extra care.

This alert may be updated with Flash Alerts where necessary. Please stayed tuned to Net-Weather for any updates.

Confidence Level: 80%
