here=donny

stopped sleety rain and even a cloud break visible to east,almost nil snow left in back, max 2.7C, the coldest this winter. I have had 6 consecutive mornings with snow lying, each time it goes, but on each night its got replenished. I must look in my records to see when this last happened here this late in winter.

Mean temp for the last 6 days=2.5C having been 6.1C before, mean now down to 5.1C

Snow stopped here at 1900 after falling for 23 hours continuously.

Much of the snow was light or moderate and there was a slow thaw of lying snow from beneath due to unfrozen ground, for this reason the snowfall today added only another 6cm or so the total. This is verified by the 2cm depth soil temperature which has risen from 0.0c on the 21st to 0.6c today, this temperature rise has occurred due to the insulating properties of the snow and heat being advected from warmer soil beneath ( temp' at 1m depth is 5.6c )

There was continuous drifting of the snow throughout the day, drifts are commonly 1-1.5m deep with some up to 1.8m.

Temp' at 1800 0.1c

Max' today 0.2c

Min' today -1.9c

Grass min' -2.5c

Sunshine today nil

Mean wind speed at 1800 26 mph NE, gusting to 36

Highest gust today 42 mph at 1203

Vis' at 1800 600m due to blowing snow

Average undrifted depth 25.0cm

8 oktas nimbostratus with continuous moderate snow falling and moderate drifting snow.

Barometer 1015.1mb, steady.
