Winter is still here but only just. Some brief but heavy snow showers overnight brought another 1cm giving a total of about 11cm since Monday evening. This morning is grey and damp, very fine snow has fallen for the last couple of hours - more the snow equivalent of misty drizzle. Winds have eased off considerably but are still northerly.

This mornings snow showers are expected to die out soon and give way to slightly higher temperatures and a rapid thaw of any still lying snow, but as temperatures fall away this evening, ice may become more of a problem. Cloud will slowly disperse throughout the day leaving a clear but cold night.

Expected high of 3C, in the northerly wind feeling more like -2C.

-0.2C (min -0.4C @06:25) windchill -2.9C

5kts NNW (10 minute average); gusting 12kts (1 minute average over last hour); max gust 15kts @ 07:06

0.0mm/hr last hour; max 0.0mm/min over last 12hrs; total 0.00mm/12hrs

1010.2hPa msl corrected, trend falling slowly, -0.3hPa/hr

93% humidity

-2.9C dewpoint (-1.0C wetbulb)

Good Morning everyone

There is a Flash message just issued, PLEASE read it. For those already affected do stay safe. For others snow has accumulated to over 30cm on much of the higher parts of the whole Pennines region, from Northumbria down to the Peak District. Blizzard conditions cover much of the area mentioned. More snow will fall today, possibly giving another 10-15cm in some of the higher parts.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE HIGH LEVEL ROADS IN THIS AREA.

Snow will continue to fall over much of England, Wales and southern an eastern Scotland, up to 5-10cm in some parts.

This will be updated this evening.

Roads are all clear in southern parts of peak district - staffordshire moorlands etc - only minor roads are affected - mostly where a plough has taken off the snow layer to about 1cm and it has frozen.

Wind is picking up here so watch out for some drifting snow off the fields especially gateways and breaks in the stone walling along the roadsides.

Hope this is of some use
