Weather Alert

Category: Level 2

Weather type: Snow and Ice

Affecting: All of the UK

Time and Date Valid For: 20:00 Wednesday 02nd March - 18:00 Thursday 03rd March 2005.

Time Of Issue: 19.50 Wednesday 02nd March 2005.

This is an update to Net-Weather Alert 00075 issued yesterday (Tuesday) evening.

Low pressure is currently sat close to southeast England, and is feeding in a cold northeasterly wind. Outbreaks of heavy rain, sleet and snow have affected many southeastern areas today, with the worst of the snow falling in Kent, where severe disruption has occurred.

Further snowfall is likely for much of the night in southeast England, especially in Kent and Sussex, where further accumulations are likely to add to the existing cover. As the winds increase, drifting is likely of lying snow. People in these areas are strongly advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Further snow showers are likely overnight in other eastern areas of England and Scotland, with a slight covering possible in places.

Temperatures will fall below freezing everywhere, so widespread ice is likely to develop.

During tomorrow, any remaining sleet and snow showers will gradually die away from eastern and southeastern areas.

Further rain, sleet and hill snow will move southwards across Scotland during tomorrow.

Please stay tuned to Net-Weather for any possible Flash Alerts that may be issued if necessary. The next scheduled update will be tomorrow evening.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
