If you need an indestructible plant, Lady P I'd suggest something like an Aspidistra, Chlorophytum or Sansevieria. Crassulas, which are related to Kalanchoes, are almost indestructible.

We had one about 25 years ago which had all its roots eaten off by vine weevil larvae and fell out of its pot. I assumed it was a lost cause and threw it outside on the compost heap where it lay for several weeks, gradually disappering under a pile of vegetable peelings.

When I turned over the heap I was amazed to see it was still green and promptly re-potted it. It's now about 30 years old, has been frosted twice and lost all it's leaves but is still growing strongly.

Hmm... thank you Terminal Moraine... I shall staple the list to the classroom door in the hopes one of the parents gives me a plant that I can actually maintain. I hate being so un-green-fingered... but honestly, if I touch a plant, it disintegrates!
