May Day Bank Holiday Weather Of The Past

    With yet another poor May Day Bank Holiday threatening, here's past May Day Bank Holidays. The frustrating thing about the May Day Bank Holiday is that has just missed out on some superb spells of weather such as 1987, 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1997

    A couple of days before the May Day Bank Holiday weekend in 1987, temperatures were get into the low 20s but by the Saturday of the long weekend, we had snow in Manchester.

    The first May Day Bank Holiday was in 1978

    1st May 1978: Cold and fairly wet, with low pressure to the south and easterly winds

    7th May 1979: Fairly unsettled with rain but drier to the south

    5th May 1980: Dry with best of sun in west but with a cold ENE wind

    4th May 1981: Cold with northerly winds and showers

    3rd May 1982: Very windy with showers or longer spells of rain

    2nd May 1983: Cloudy with longer spells of rain or showers

    7th May 1984: Best of sun in west but cold in a NNE wind.

    6th May 1985: Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain especially in the west.

    5th May 1986: Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain at times

    4th May 1987: Mostly dry but cool with further rain coming into the north later

    2nd May 1988: Fairly warm but with showers at times

    1st May 1989: Some sun and fairly warm but rain in far north

    7th May 1990: Cooler and with showers at times.

    6th May 1991: A lot of cloud and cold especially in the SE with further rain coming into NW

    4th May 1992: Mostly dry in the south but a lot of cloud with rain further north

    3rd May 1993: Cool but with sunny periods and dry

    2nd May 1994: Mostly dry with some sun

    8th May 1995 (VE DAY): Cooler and more cloud around but mostly dry

    6th May 1996: Mostly dry with some sun but cool

    5th May 1997: Turning increasingly colder and wetter during the day.

    4th May 1998: Cloud and rain spreading down from NW

    3rd May 1999: Mostly dry with some sun

    1st May 2000: Mostly dry with sun and fairly warm

    7th May 2001: Mostly dry with some sun

    6th May 2002: Cool with a lot of cloud and some rain in the north but drier to the south

    5th May 2003: Warm in the SE but with showers in other areas.

    3rd May 2004: Some showers in places

    2nd May 2005: Heavy showers in places with thunder

    2nd May 2005: Heavy showers in places with thunder

    The Saturday Night into the Sunday morning of that weekend was very thundery here, with high level thunderstorms are very large hail. Not to much thunder at the start of the storm, but a lot of flashing (lightning), the thunder itself wasn't to loud, just pretty much a low groan.

    1998 - Cool and cloudy with rain later.

    1999 - Mainly overcast but warm.

    2000 - Cool but dry and cloudy.

    2001 - Quite warm with sunny periods.

    2002 - Cold and cloudy then heavy rain later.

    2003 - Warm and sunny throughout.

    2004 - Showery morning then sunny.

    2005 - Thundery, torrential showers but mild.

    2006 - Dry & sunny but slightly cool.
