Overall, the warmest and driest June Ive ever recorded. Only 4 days in the month had maxima below average and 23 days were above 20°C. The 11th and 12th were the warmest days, reaching 29.4°C and 29.2°C in a southerly airflow. The minima on the 12th was also 16.8°C, the highest since August 9th 2004.

Being a rather anticyclonic and extremely dry month, thunderstorms were few and far between. The only day with thunderstorms was the 12th, which saw 3 storms pass overhead but these still brought very little in the way of rain.

Sunshine was overall well above average, though the month had an exceptionally sunny first half and a rather dull second. The second half also contained a few cooler days, with the 22nd (16.9°C) and 26th (16.3°C) being the lowest. The month was also remarkable in that it lacked any cool nights, in fact aside from the 1st, every day had a minima above 8°C and 23 days with minima in double figures.

June 2006 Report.

By Paul Carfoot.

June opened with high pressure centred over the British Isles, so almost all areas where fine warm and sunny. This began quite an extraordinary long period of hot sunny weather for many areas of the country. Here in Burton the temperatures climbed higher and higher each day so by the 11th temperatures were getting as high as 27.3c. The high pressure started to give ground by the 12th and a thundery breakdown occurred. A couple of cooler welcome cloudy days followed. Soon though the Azores high pressure was back, so by the 15th Burton was enjoying more very warm sunny weather, with temperatures well in to the mid 20c’s, mid 70f’s

By the 19th the Azores high began to retreat back to its namesake, this allowed low pressure to move in from the Atlantic, so the weather turned more unsettled. The rather unsettled and at times windy conditions lasted for just a couple of days.

By the 22nd another ridge of high pressure made a return from the Azores and Burton enjoyed another 3 days of fine warm sunny weather. Pressure began to fall briefly again on the 26th and a little rain was noted on the night of the 27th, but by the 28th pressure began to build again to the northeast over Scandinavia, so the final days of June ended hot and sunny.

A quick summary.

A mostly fine, extremely dry and warm month for Burton with high pressure being the main driving force, first from the Azores, then towards the end of the month a continental high over Scandinavia provided for the continuation of the fine weather.

Average maximum temperature = 21.5c

Average minimum temperature = 14.03c

Mean temperature = 17.76c + 3.66c above the 1971 – 2000 CET average.

Warmest day on the 11th = 27.3c

Coldest day on the 14th = 16.6c

Warmest night on the 12th = 20.6c

Coldest night on the 1st = 6.9c

Ground Frosts = 0

Air frost = 0

Now that I'm into my 4th year (started June 2003) of recordings I'm able to compare to a long-term average temperature wise, although it's taking a while to get my head around it B) .

June 2006

Average max = 22.66c (+0.92c on average)

Average min = 10.96c (-0.12 on average)

Mean = 16.31

Highest = 29c (12th & 17th)

Lowest = 5c (22nd)

Dry days = 23

Rain days = 7

Rainfall = 39mm (inc 25mm on 25th/26th)

The rainfall figure is amusing when compared to June 2005 because 39mm actually fell on just one day last year (24th) as part of an overall total of 84mm.

This was a warmer month than my average but not by any great amount, however there were only 4 days which didn't reach 20c.

sorry John your post is in the wrong thread, mods will probably put it right, it goes in the daily weather for today Saturday 1 July 2006.

Welcome to Net Wx it is confusing at first but you will soon get used to it. Enjoy all the goodies there are on the site and the various weather or cafe threads.

regards

John

hi

Its rather amusing after reading some of the threads of gloom and doom about this month and the rest of the summer.

It looks as if most areas have had their warmest June in 30 years. In this area, using my data(10 years) and the Finningley data(1942-1995) it’s the warmest ever. June 1960 got to 16.9C.

My figures are:-

Mean Max 23.6C(19.2C) absolute max was 30.5C on 11th

Mean Min=11.5C(9.5C) with the lowest overnight Min of 8.2C on 15th

The coldest day was 22nd with 15.6C and the warmest night 12th with 17.3C

The overall Mean Temp was 17.6C(14.4C)

Rainfall was only 9.6mm with the wettest day being the 13th with 3.4mm. However, my data does seem about 20% too low compared to other gauges in this area.

There were 8 days with >/= 0.2mm and 3 with >/= 1.0mm

No frosts and no fog with thunder on just 1 day

John

JUNE 2006 - Yatton, North Somerset

1st - 4th

The month started dry and sunny and increasingly warm towards the 3rd with 26.6C recorded. The 4th was hot though a thunderstorm tracked close by across Bristol in the evening.

5th - 12th

There were sunny intervals or longer spells of sunshine between the 5th and 8th, sunshine was quite hazy but temperature managed to touch 28C bu the 8th. It then became very hot and sunny over the weekend with 32.9C the high on the 10th. The 11th was also hot but became increasingly cloudy later. I was woken at 5am on the 12th by a spectacular overhead thunderstorm. 10.1mm of rain fell then it was mainly a dry adn overcast day.

13th - 18th

There were still some heavy downpours around the 13th but cleared leaving a cloudy and much cooler day on the 14th. From the 15th onwards, it was dry, sunny and very warm by the 17th with a high of 26.4C. The 18th was overcast but still warm.

19th - 21st

Low pressure approached from the southwest. The 19th saw outbreaks of drizzle and light rain on and off all day. After a sunnier day with recovering temperatures on the 20th, rain arrived overnight meaning a cooler but bright day on the 21st.

22nd - 26th

High pressure returned with more sunshine and by the 24th, the temperature was 25.4C. The 25th was hot and sunny with a high of 28.6C but cloud built up through the day leading to heavy, thundery downpours overnight and a day of much needed persistent rain on the 26th. 19.4mm fell during the 24 hours from 6pm on the 25th and 6pm on the 26th.

27th - 30th

The end of the month was dry and fine. At first there were pleasant spells of either sunnier intervals or slightly more cloudy intervals. By the 29th, it became warm and humid and the 30th saw a rise to 26.9C and high humidity.

Lowest Night-Time Temperature - 12.3C (Wednesday 21st)

Highest Night-Time Temperature - 19.7C (Saturday 10th)

Lowest Day-Time Temperature - 18.3C (Monday 26th)

Highest Day-Time Temperature - 32.9C (Saturday 10th)

Total Monthly Rainfall - 42.9mm

Average Rainfall for June - 49.8mm (since I began records in 1997)

Statistics for June 2006, relative to estimated 1971-2000 averages for the location:

Mean max: 18.8C (+2.2)

Mean min: 11.2C (+2.0)

Mean: 15.0C (+2.1)

Difficulties with rainfall recorder- only 2mm, which I don't trust at all, though it was certainly a very dry month.

Warmest: 24.8C (12th)

Lowest max: 12.6C (25th)

Highest min: 15.4C (17th)

Lowest min: 7.6C (27th)

The first 12 days of June in Cleadon were dry and very sunny in general, though cooling sea breezes ensured that the maxima weren't particularly high during the first 10 days; as the wind changed to a southerly the 11th and 12th were very warm.

From the 13th onwards the weather was rather cloudy and dry with a fair amount of anticyclonic gloom, though the month ended with a couple of sunny days. It continued rather warm, primarily by night,

It was the warmest June since 2003 at Cleadon. The average minimum was actually 0.1C higher than 2003 (although given inhomogeneities in my records, not statistically significant) but the average maximum was 0.6C lower. The sunshine excess of 1-12 June was largely negated by the mainly cloudy weather thereafter, with an excess of around 10% according to the Met Office sunshine maps. This means that June 2005 was actually sunnier than June 2006, while the last significantly sunnier June occurred as recently as 2003.

Leeds did rather better sunshine wise, with an excess in the 20-30% region.

That is a low value indeed, though not completely out of the question.

I only recorded 12.2mm all month, but 7.2mm of that was from convective activity which I can believe would have missed Cleadon due to its more northerly location. Overall, it could be due to the fact that the month lacked any real frontal rainfall.

Dry, warm, sunny. The 4th consecutive June to be warmer than average here. Although by no means consistently warm, and despite that some low minimums actually made the overall mean identical with 2005, this was subjectively the second 'best' June after 2003 since I started recording in 1984. It was significantly drier than average here once more although only the 7th driest since 1984. Sunshine was approx 10% higher than last year.
