Last night's and this morning's dog walks were as glorious as ever with some unusual snow formations. Our snizzle has given way to blue skies, definitely some snow chances for here next week after a warmer weekend.

That’s impressive for the city. That’s usually a winter scene once you get up to places like lake Louise and everything is encased in snow and ice.

Gosh, how fab.   And here’s us getting excited about a couple of centimetres of slushy snow!  Sheesh!

I think I live in one of the snowiest parts of Calgary, we're almost literally in the far NW corner of the city. I have noticed every time we get snow we almost always have more than anywhere else.

Gorgeous sunrise today:

Nice wee warmer sunny weekend before some more snow chances next week, I could get used to this climate.

I think it’s the highest part of the city - maybe that makes a difference. Yeah it’s not bad is it lol

Got some photos from the family my daughter stayed with last year over in Indiana where they have had their first serious snowstorm of the winter. Makes my current 1cm a bit of a let down.

It’s white this morning and a little snow in the air. But what’s that coming over the hill....is it a snowstorm?

It’s the start of a prolonged snowfall event covering a fairly large area. Banff national park has a snowfall warning of up to 70cm over the next few days.

I’d anticipate maybe 10-15cm’s for Canmore and less as you head further east towards Calgary. Edmonton even getting in on a little action too.

I have seen these systems fill in before and cover a larger area with more snow but conversely go the other way with less - so you never know.

It does look like this week will be quite a snowy one and then getting quite cold by the weekend. Minus 30’s showing on some forecasts....

My brother lives in the States (Madison, Morris County, NJ) - right in the middle of the current East coast action.  1 foot down... 1 foot + to go.  Snowing at a rate of 2-3 inches per hour at the moment.

Today will have to go some to fit into this forecast as it's -13C with snizzly freezing fog at 9am. Somehow we are to gain 21C and then lose 16C between now and later this afternoon

Yeah I think that’s a big off on the high temps but you never know in Alberta lol.

Snowfall warnings now extended to include Canmore through to Calgary for up to 15cm’s.

The fun starts this evening.....

Within the last hour the wind has picked up and sleet has turned to moderate snow. Wet ground has started turning white. There’s a chill in the air. And so it begins.... ❄️

Looks like wind chill will be in the minus 30’s for you tonight. With minus 40’s wind chill showing up later in the week

You had sleet? The warmest we hit here today was -9C, we've had very light snizzle for most of the day and we've currently got some moderate snow.

Yeah it was above freezing at one point but then dropped a fair few degrees. Made everywhere wet at first then transitioned quickly. Blanket of white now and really coming down.

You might get a surprise overnight if you’re under this....

@Coopsy and @cheeky_monkey I wonder who out of the three of us will be collecting the most snow this weekend? It is looking good for somewhere to get a dump.

Ended up with about 12+cm so right on the money for the snowfall warning. Lake Louise had a fresh foot of powder. Great conditions.

Well based on the ECM snow accumulation chart I think everyone might do well. I’m crap at reading these but (correct me if I’m wrong) it looks like anything from 10-20cm for everyone over the next 72/96hrs, higher the further west and south you are.

Up to 20cm being forecast between now and tomorrow evening. Surprised there’s not a warning as that fits within the parameters. Currently flurries in the air.

We've had light snow for hours, about an inch or so but it's hard to tell what's new and what's old snow any more. Enough that the motorway is several black stripes in a world of white.

I spotted that as I was checking out the Calgary webcam. Beddington Trail/Country Hills looks bad at the mo.

The snows setting in now. Switching between light and moderate and brown roads slowly turning white.

It should be a good weather weekend with the snow and I will also be smashing my "coldest temp" PB over the next few days. It was -19.9C, but is set to be reduced by a long way.

Do the Govt have thresholds for the weather warning or does it depend on different factors?

It certainly will be and you should get to turn boiling water into snow with the temps coming up

They sure do. Take a look at this, think you’ll like it. Shows all the parameters for warnings for every weather type for each province.

Although fairly cold this morning at minus 18oC - the extreme cold is literally on the doorstep. (Minus 60 wind chill for some)

Its not often I’ve seen a weather warning for almost all of the prairie provinces for extreme cold.

To put that into perspective thats almost 700,000 sq miles under an extreme cold warning (about 7 times the size of the entire UK)

The extreme cold now affecting pretty much all of  ‘western Canada’. All 4 western Canadian provinces and half of Ontario. That’s an impressive range. Even tropical British Columbia has an arctic outflow warning.

Pretty much just the extreme southwest of Alberta not included. It’s a warm minus 26 at the moment - no wonder we’re not in the warning
