ALERT STATE INCREASED AT ARENAL - COSTA RICA

After several months of increasing activity at Arenal, the alert state has now been raised to 3 (on a scale of 1-4) by scientists from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).

This suggest a probable eruption within "days, weeks or months" which could lead to "an explosive eruption or damaging lava and rock flows."

UPDATE - SARYCHEV

The eruption continues and I hope to have more info on this a bit later.

Latest news is that due the the size and extent of the eruption column/cloud, numerous flights have been or will be cancelled/rerouted including flights from Washington to Tokyo and several Air Canada flights to various Pacific destinations.

This one sounds quite juicy! It's a pity there is not a lot of monitoring in the area as I would love to see the ash cloud in phots, web cams etc.

Let's hope it releases a lot of SO2 in the atmosphere!

UPDATE - SARYCHEV

Latest information suggests that the eruption calmed down somewhat yesterday but kicked off again at close to 1am UK time this morning, with steady ash emission and a eruption cloud anywhere between 10-13km in height.

Images captured by the MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite show the cloud to be a dark brown colour which suggestes heavy ash content, rather than just steam and gas.

Below is just such an image captured yesterday (courtesy MODIS Rapid Response Team/NASA):

Astonishing satellite image! That's a mighty explosion/ash cloud. Certainly larger than the recent redoubt explosions...

UPDATE - SARYCHEV

Latest information on Sarychev is a very brief bulletin from SVERT which states that a "new" eruption of the volcano began on 15th June, that this has lead to continuous ash production and that the ash cloud from this phase of the eruption now stretches some 360km to the NW of the volcano.

Many flights between North American and Asia have had to be either cancelled or delayed due to the eruption with Air Canada, Air China, Asiana Airlines and Korean Airlines all cancelling and delaying flights in and out of Vancouver.

UPDATE - SARYCHEV

Some initial information and pictures of the relatively large amounts of SO2 being pumped out by Sarychev here:

NASA Earth Observatory

Must have been very powerful eruptions, top end altitude 21 kilometres thats not far off of 70,000'(wow).

How's this for a fantastic image (taken from the ISS) of the Sarychev eruption?

http://scienceblogs.com/eruptions/2009/06/...e_for_61820.php

Not only can you see the column of ash, you can see the pyroclastic flows heading down the volcano flanks. It;s very interesting the way the eruption seems to have pushed the cloud away...

Is it about time to start a new thread after 96 pages?

Would not want to lose this interesting topic but it could be pruned.

Just a thought.

SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN ACTIVITY AT ANAK KRAKATAU - INDONESIA

Whilst Anak Krakatau has been gradually increasing in activity recently it appears that there has been a significant upturn in recent weeks. Authorities are reporting that yesterday at the volcano there was 182 Strombolian-type eruptions, 11 volcanic earthquakes, 8 deep volcanic tremors, 54 shallow volcanic shocks, 44 tremors and 29 instances of smoke/ash generation. Local media reports some residents fleeing the area in alarm although the Indonesian authorities have not, as yet, order any mass evacuation of the area.

A 3km exclusion zone is in place around the volcano and the alert stage is at ORANGE.

UPDATE - SARYCHEV - KURILE ISLANDS

Alert state has been lowered to ORANGE for the time being although activity continues. There is a steam/gas plume rising from the volcano which stretches some 29km to the NW and there is still an intense thermal anomaly at the volcano which may suiggest she is not quite finished yet. Meanwhile SVERT is reporting tha another Kurile volcano may be showing signs of life. The Severgin cone of the nearby Kharimkotan volcano may also be emitting steam and gas and may also be about to erupt.

Kharimkotan last erupted in 1933 during which the Severgin cone collapsed, triggering a tsunami that reached the Onekotan and Paramushir Islands, killing two people.

UPDATE - REDOUBT - ALASKA

Activity at Redoubt, whilst still being above background, is fairly quiet with low intensity on-going seismic activity, which could suggest that the rate of lava dome groth has slowed somewhat. This may mean that Redoubt has done for now and may be in the process of nodding-off again. Famous last words of course, it'll probably go boom tomorrow!! Alert state remains at ORANGE.

UPDATE - SARYCHEV - KURILE ISLANDS

Activity continues and the alert state remains at ORANGE. A gas/steam plume is streaming 9km NW of the volcano and there remains an intense thermal anomaly. SVERT also confirms that there is also a thermal anomaly at the Severgin cone of the Kharimkotan volcano also in the Kuriles, which may suggest that it too is about to erupt. Kharimkotans eruptive history is also explosive, with debris avalanches which have produced fatal tsunami.

UPDATE - SAUDI ARABIA

the tectonic/volcanic activity reported a few weeks ago still continues with another upsurge in earthquake activity over the past few days and the return of evacuees from the Al Ais area delayed. SGS has recorded a quake of Mag 4.55 over the past couple of days and according to Saudi media reports, a large chunk of the Harrat Al Shaqqah volcano has been detached from the main body, caused by the opening of faults at its base. According to geology professor Dr. Aziz bin La'boon this opening has been caused by "molten rocks under the ground tried to push their way to the surface through the channels used by old volcanoes that erupted earlier, but due to their old age the rocks had solidified, so the current molten rocks are trying to find a new way out."

One to keep an eye on.

UPDATE - CLEVELAND - ALASKA

A small eruption occurred from Cleveland on 25th June. This produced an ash plume that rose to 15,000ft. As a result, AVO have raised the alert status to ORANGE, meaning we again have two Alaskan volcanos on this state of alert. There have been no reports of subsequent activity and this is quite common for Cleveland so the alert state may be lowered again fairly soon.

According to www.spaceweather.com, the SO2 cloud from Sarychev has now reached Europe, so we might be in line for some spectacular sunsets over the next few days.

UPDATE - CLEVELAND - ALASKA

As expected, since there has been no activity of note since the brief, small eruption on 25 June, AVO have lowered the alert state at Clevleand to YELLOW.

UPDATE - CLEVELAND - ALASKA

As expected, since there has been no activity of note since the brief, small eruption on 25 June, AVO have lowered the alert state at Clevleand to YELLOW.

Also, Redoubt is now lowered to Yellow due to diminished lava dome growth! Is Redoubt going to sleep?

Meanwhile, spaceweather.com have posted several images of volcanic sunsets across Asia, America and Europe thanks to the levels of SO2 in the atmosphere from the 12th June Sarichev eruptions. I wonder how much SO2 has been emited and what impacts it may have on global temperatures due to increased solar radiation.

Unfortunately, Sarichev has calmed down considerably after its impressive eruption on the 12th June!
