But have you seen how Southern Greece is warming up on the activity though as well. Is there a link here guys n gals? I really hope nothing else of the same scale is brewing but I do get the feeling it is. :(

As to the ring of fire maybe it has just settled for a bit ...hopefully.

Again I would say as the quoted site has only just started to include more detail of european quakes it can be miss leading Greece always has a back ground level of activity similar to that around the san andreas fault. I don't think we would be saying there is an increase in activity if we saw that around San Fransico etc. What is interesting is the lack of activity around san fransisco

A 4.8 quake in California, close to Sacremento. Quite shallow too, about 14km. Also a flurry of small quakes around Poland/Czech borders.

Update : unfortunately, if the epicenter is confirmed, the impact will be right below a populated area. Not a big city, but a number of rural small towns, which means in China always thousands of inhabitants.

following on from my previous post

MAP 5.7 2011/11/09 19:23:35 38.349 43.403 4.8 EASTERN TURKEY

this is in the area which was previously damaged

does not look too good for these people at present

M 5.7 2011/11/09 19:23 Depth 4.8 km EASTERN TURKEY

09:23:35 PM at epicenter

Extremely dangerous aftershock, probably creating more damage and at least additional injured people if the preliminary data are confirmed.

KOERI Turkey has reported a magnitude (ML) of 5.6 at a depth of 5 km / still very dangerous. 7 minutes later a 4.5 aftershock occurred in the same area. Again a lot of misery for the people already hard hit during the M 7.2 earthquake.

The major problem seen so far appears to be with a hotel in which aid workers and journalists were staying:

Yes, not a good scenario. It seems that people were warned that the two hotels had probably been damaged in the previous quake, but rooms were hard to come by and they were almost forced to have to use them.

An earthquake in eastern Turkey has killed at least seven people and left dozens more trapped under the rubble of two hotels, a school and other buildings. About 25 buildings collapsed after the magnitude 5.7 quake struck 16km (9 miles) south of the city of Van at 9:23pm (7:23pm GMT), TRT state television reported. Rescuers have so far pulled at least 23 people alive from the rubble, according to the Anatolian news agency.

Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said the quake toppled 25 buildings in the city of Van but only three of them were occupied since the others have been evacuated after suffering damages in last month's powerful quake. He added that the rescue work was now concentrating at the site of two collapsed hotels and one apartment building.
