Currently 0.8C feeling like -3.2C in the wind, dewpoint is -0.4C and the wind is coming from the WSW at 14 knots, altho that has varied from time to time to WNW.

Thick dark clouds seem to be building out to the west.

Overall a mixed day with the temp falling away early morning and two fairly hefty snow showers with hail in between leaving a covering further up (mostly gone now)

have to say, that although things aren't perfect, the snow lovers are still waiting for the big event :) and the cold lovers cast their minds back to that oh so distant spell in December, for the first time in many years, it really feels to me like a proper winter :)

and to justify that, I mean we have had several wintry speels, a nice cold snap and the general feeling that any mild blast from the Atlanic, with the mild and wet weeks always have been accompanied by the uncertainty that it would not be with us long

the most interesting winter I can remember in a very long while

Today (and yesterday) were the sort of days I associate with a late-March or early-April NW'ly outbreak, not mid-January: mostly clear and sunny, with the odd heavy, cold shower containing bits of sleet and hail appearing out of nowhere; temps in the mid-to-high single digits but feeling mild in the sun.

The day started off quite sunny but showers soon moved in. Had a rain shower at about noon and then a hail shower at 3.30 and i have just had another leaving a slight dusting on grass/car. Temp currently just 0.5C

Cold air digging in, 2C with a gusty westerly wind is very good indeed :)

I'm sure people will moan saying oh but its not cold enough, well in a gusty westerly wind you will not get moderate to severe frosts that is a fact, what you will get is temps near 0C with a significant wind chill making it feel very cold.

Rain during the early hours of this morning turned to snow by about 0630 and lasted about 2 hours, giving a covering of 2.5cm by 0900. After a few light snow flurries between 0900 and 1000 the morning became dry but it stayed cloudy.

Further showers, initially of rain arrived around 1230 and quickly turned to hail, then snow. Since 1300 there have been further snow showers with a few short sunny intervals.

The last snow shower, around 1730 gave a thin covering on areas where the earlier snow had thawed.

Snow cover has persisted all day above 280m.

Well another cold day max of 2c (currently -1c and starry skies) dull all day, snow covered hills bathed in sunshine to the west with dark cloud to the east with obviously precipitation just to the east of us. Flurry of snow on Sunday morning which settled on frozen ground and can still be seen in the shaded areas making the 4th month in a row with settling snow( whats happened to the mild winters?). Spring bulbs are just breaking the soil surface, in recent years some have been flowering by now, no fresh green grass growth in the fields for the sheep which were burn"t brown by the New Year frost something we had got used to lately. All in all a real old fashioned winter which if it turns really frosty in February means it will have reverted to the old patterns. On that basis I predict a late spring up here with Easter snow and lots of N and E winds bringing showery snow until May and not wet snow either but fine powdery snow or graupel typical of arctic northerlies in the spring here.
