Eureka!,

Finally the horrible rain has changed to the white stuff, not exceptionally heavy here at the moment and not settling just yet (the ground is very wet). A tad above 0C with a moderate NW wind. Hopefully the precipitation will increase and the temperature drop just a little further, fingers crossed.

Street light watching pays off in the end!

Been grey and still over here all day. I stepped outside this morning and it felt like standing inside the bathroom after taking a shower. Airport metar was reporting 20/19 at that point, and it was quite grotty.

Currently at 7PM, Whangarei the northern city is reporting 25/23, which is even worse! Bleugh!

Freezing fog and frost this morning made conditions very icy after last nights snowfall left a fresh covering of around 1cm, on top of the old patchy 4cm of snow. The temperature dropped to –1.3c and –5.3c on the snow cover. The minimum air temperature of –3.0c was recorded at the beginning of the 24hour period yesterday. At observation, thick fog and icy. The fog thinned to mist through the morning, but it stayed dull, damp and overcast. The late afternoon saw light rain setting in. Top Temperature 3.2c with a steady thaw. The rain turned to sleet and wet snow during the evening giving a temporary slight cover.

More wintry weather on the way and staying cold according to the Met Office:

UK Outlook for Saturday 14 Feb 2009 to Monday 23 Feb 2009:

The outlook for this period is for the fairly cold weather to continue. There will be more in the way of dry and fine weather around than we have seen lately, with some hard night time frosts, but also some reasonable spells of sunshine by day. Wintry showers are also likely however, particularly in northern and eastern areas of the country, though nowhere is immune. This means there is a risk of sleet and snow almost anywhere. Later in the period, there are indications that the weather may turn more unsettled, but remain cold. This indicates that the probability of snowfall will increase, and again all areas are at risk, but northern and eastern areas are perhaps the most prone.

After more than 24 hours of continuous rain it's finally cleared and the sun has come out in the last few minutes. There was some light snow for a few minutes behind the rain here in Basingstoke but it's stopped now. Temperature around 2 deg C after an overnight low of 0.5. Wind moderate NW.
