Interesting month, April 1892. The period 2nd to the 11th had a CET of 10.4 and was pleasantly warm with temperatures into the 20+Cs

On the 11th, a cold Arctic airflow developed and there then followed a period of low maxima, severe frosts and snowfalls. The period 11th-19th April had a CET of just 2.6 and this coincided with the Easter period

Buxton had a max' of 21.6c on April 1st 1892 and a min' of -8.7c on the 19th. The min' value was the second lowest in April on the whole record, back to 1871, beaten only by -13.3c in April 1917.

Another great post about yesteryears weather. That sure was a classic spring switcharound, doesn't get more extreme.. similiar to what happened in April 1981.

Some very consistently low minima, pushed to get such consistently low temps in the depths of winter anymore..

Seems that warm spells in April can be very conducive to an onslaught of cold as they allow the cold sto bottle up over the arctic and with the arctic only just coming out of its winter minima, a northerly can be a very potent affair indeed.. all that latent cold just crashes down over the country.
