January 2010 was a fantastic winter month with a decent amount of snow following an earlier dumping around Christmas and a good February 2009. This snow however stuck around a lot longer as it was of the drier type and sustained cold continued for days and days after. The first snow of the month fell in showers on the 5th before a pivoting weather system brought prolonged heavy snow and up to 15cm overnight into the 6th.

Bristol Harbour also froze up again after doing so in January 2009, though the Bristol ferries still endeavoured in sailing on through the ice:

Wednesday 13th:

Then as the Atlantic tried to make an influence over the UK, a wonderful battleground scenario saw snow winning out against rain overnight 12th/13th dumping another 5cm overnight. This snow stuck around on top of the old snow until it had completely vanished by the 17th.

Sunday 24th:

An anticyclonic easterly brought dry and at first cloudy conditions but gave way to a lovely sunset.

Tuesday 26th:

On a day when the air pressure excessed 1040mb, this was the sunset at the end of the day.

Sunday 31st:

A tame northerly at the end of the month brought some very cold nights again and a sprinkling of frozen snow overnight.

So, overally, despite not much showery cloudscapes, January provided some excellent snow photography opportunities and as I would find out, so would February. A fantastic winter month and the coldest I have ever recorded.

some nice photos there Michael to remind us all of what winter was like, not that some in Ireland and Scotland need any reminder being still in it up to their knees or more in places.

The web cams for Lecht and Cairngorm are still mostly not functioning after the last 36 hours or so of another whiteout.

I'll see if I can find some of mine and drop in here.

Snow in Doncaster is even rarer than temperatures of 21C in early April!

well-problems with various things at the moment-I'll do it eventually!
