But isn't some Icelandic volcano thought to have caused all sorts of devastation, bad weather, starvartion and near destruction of society in the British Isles in the very early post Roman period?

Yes, but it depends how big the eruption was and when it erupted. Volcanoes near the equator are much more able to do that.

I've found some nice pictures of the activity at Hudson. http://www.emol.com/...udson/index.htm

Thanks Martin, these are some awesome pics! I really want to visit Chile before I die! Posted Image

Interesting paragraph from wikipedi re: Hudson volcano

Large eruptions around 4750 BCE and 1890 BCE are believed to have been of Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) 6; these are probably responsible for the large caldera. The 4750 BCE eruption may have wiped out many if not all groups of early man living in central Patagonia at that time, based on evidence from the Los Toldos archaeological site. Recently, the volcano has had moderate eruptions in 1891 and 1971 as well as a large eruption in 1991 .

Was just trying to head up that although equatorial volcanoes can have more effects on a global scale (depending on size, type, emissions, etc.) discounting the possible effects of a major eruption at the latitude of Katla might be ignoring folk history.

While it is true that equatorial volcanoes have bigger global potential due to trade winds (QBO), in the UK Kalta's location would be fine.

That being said, even if Kalta had a large eruption it is extremely unlikely that the eruption would last long enough to release enough SO2 to have a large impact on our winter weather.

If we get another Laki eruption lasting several months then you will have my attention however Kalta is likely to be a quick explosion and then very weak activity afterward.

Many people make the wrong assumption that every major eruption will cool the earth enougth to give us a winter freeze, for SO2 emmisions it is generally about the length of time rather than how powerful (Laki's 8 month fissure eruption released something like 300 times more SO2 than Pinatubo's explosive eruption).

BBC news are also reporting on Hudson volcano, calling it a monster!

http://www.bbc.co.uk...merica-15493442

Given the fact that it had a VEI5 eruption in 1991, I wouldn't expect anything as big this time but you never know. It has given some catastrophic eruption in the distant past!

We cannot rule out a big eruption at this volcano given its past.

The strength of this eruption is increasing given that the column was previously at 1km and is now at 5km.

Very interesting.

SANTIAGO, Chile – Chile's Hudson Volcano released three huge columns of steam and ash that combined in a cloud more than 3 miles high on Friday, threatening a much larger eruption that had authorities in Chile and Argentina on red alert.

Any news on el hierro? The reason I ask this is because they have reported an earthquake of 3.9 there this morning which is quite strong compared to other quakes.

New volcanic eruption off El Hierro

MADRID, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The underwater volcano off the coast of the island of El Hierro begun erupting on Monday evening, which saw it expel steaming fragments of magma to the surface of the ocean......... http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2011-11/01/c_131224253.htm

I like the way they bring up the 'Experts' into their story!!!

Interesting to see El Hierro erupting for the first time for many, many years though the risk to life outside the Canaries is minimal.

Eek!

Diario El Hierro writes that the analysis of the recently found lava stones found in the Las Calmas sea, reveals the possibility of a major explosive character eruption.

The University of Barcelona who analyzed the samples said that the found lava was NOT of the a Surtseynian type, the kind of eruption everybody expected so far.

If true it could be a bit of a game changer...

Says they found a rhyolite mix in with the sample they collected which ain't the best sign. Needs further investigation, but this definitely has increased the potential for a more explosive eruption if correct.

For those wondering, Rhyolite is a tad 'stiffer' (less viscous) than basalt. This would tend towards an explosive eruption than a 'rift' type eruption of free flowing lava pouring out of the vent.

Very interesting that the lava is explosive. There are also record high readings of CO2 around El Hierro which is a classic sign of a pending eruption.

There have been two earthquakes today exceeding 4, so El Hierro is back at red alert.

The harmonic tremor has built up again rapidly overnight, so it looks like there is magma flowing freely somewhere again.
