There has been a small eruption from a remote Alaska volcano. The Alaska Volcano Observatory says in a release that satellite imagery showed a low-level ash cloud from Cleveland Volcano on Sunday. Officials say the cloud dispersed over several hours as it tracked to the southeast, and there were no reports of it from nearby mariners or pilots. The alert level for the volcano was raised in June after a brief eruption and a pilot reporting an ash cloud rising to 35,000 feet. There's no real-time monitoring network at the 5,675-foot volcano, which is on an uninhabited island about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. The observatory says additional eruptions are still possible with little warning, and ash clouds 20,000 feet above sea level are possible.

Note 080 AVCAN - 24/08/2012 - 17: 00 h peninsular. -DEVELOPMENT AND MONITORING OF THE SWARM VOLCANIC EARTHQUAKE ON THE ISLAND OF EL HIERRO. In the updated map of today carry 6 localized earthquakes, although in the spectrogram and seismogram of CHIE s and see more. We continue with the same tonic than yesterday, most are in the Gulf area at approx. 9-10 km, and another deep to 21.3 km in the area of activity of the Orchilla area. Both the earthquake of Orchilla and the rest of the 5 earthquakes in the Gulf are perfectly aligned according to the direction of NE - SW which now efforts caused by magma are fading away. But in the Gulf also, as yesterday there are 2 earthquakes that also alienate NNW - SSE, passing through the area of shallow earthquakes. In terms of vibrations, today still, although quieter, has there been in the area of the Llanillos, and secure than some places, so as well as tremors, shock and dizziness. Today also reported strange smells and irritation of eyes and nose in the form of itching in some places and strange behaviour of animals, mainly dogs. In case of feeling something of all this, is convenient to report it to the IGN have documented what was in addition to the importance that has to monitor the possible opening of an eruptive mouth area... A series of small earthquakes which began Wednesday night and continued into Thursday near a long-dormant volcanic peak in Alaska's Aleutian Islands has prompted researchers to raise the alert level for the Little Sitkin volcano. The nearly 4,000-foot-high Little Sitkin volcano is named for the island where it resides, located in the Rat Islands in the Aleutian chain. The volcano has shown little activity since scientists have started observing it, with only three questionable eruptive events at the volcano since that time. The most recent eruption may have come in 1900, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Still, the AVO page for Little Sitkin mentions there may have been a "cataclysmic eruption" on the island sometime after the last ice age, which ended more than 11,000 years ago.Seismic equipment located near the volcano began detecting a "swarm of high-frequency earthquakes" at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the AVO reports. The earthquakes continued through the night into Thursday, prompting the alert level at the volcano being raised. The alert level is currently at yellow, which means that the "volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level." Additionally, aircraft traveling in the area are advised to exercise caution. The volcano is located in a remote part of the Aleutians, about 35 miles northwest of the World War II outpost of Amchitka and 200 miles west of Adak. Little Sitkin joins two other Alaska volcanoes, Iliamna and Cleveland, currently sitting at elevated alert levels.

A larger explosive eruption occurred at Bezyianni volcano in Kamchatka yesterday evening (1 Sep) around 19h15 GMT. The explosion produced an ash cloud rising to about 10 km altitude (flight level 340) and was first detected by Tokyo VAAC who sent out an ash-cloud aviation warning (major intercontinental routes pass this area).

Anak Krakatau seems to be having a rest today. How long for who knows. There's also evidence of lava flows from early eruptions.

El Hierro still shaking gently sadly information of whether the land is rising or falling doesn't seem to be available at present.

The Fuego volcano in central Guatemala is continuing to erupt, shooting lava and columns of ash into the air, and causing concerns of a possible ash cloud that could halt flights in the area. The volcano overlooks the tourist city of Antigua and is one of central America's most active volcanoes. Lava flows of around 1000m are being spewed out down the west and east sides of the volcano. No evacuations have been ordered, but aviation authorities have been alerted about a potential ash cloud, and air traffic is expected to be hindered.

One of the world's most iconic volcanoes, Mount Fuji in Japan, is under a lot of pressure and may well be heading for an eruption! This one hasn't erupted for about 300 years!

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-09/06/mount-fuji

This increase in pressure is believed to be the result of the mega earthquake of March 2011!

Clouds of volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau, or child of Krakatau, have become so prominent in recent days that Indonesian authorities have issued a warning for local residents and tourists. “The ash was carried by wind from the southeast to the south, reaching Bandarlampung,†Nurhuda, head of the observation and information section of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Lampung province told state news agency Antara. The major population center of Bandarlampung is the capital of the Lampung province and is the same distance from the volcano as the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. “We also advise fishermen and tourists not to come within a radius of 3 kilometers of Anak Krakatau. The thick plumes of smoke sent off by Krakatau contain toxic material that is hazardous for your health,†said Andi Suhardi, head of the Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargo Pancuran village. Officials advised residents to wear masks when traveling outdoors to protect themselves against the ash. Short term effects of volcanic ash could include respiratory discomfort, including nose and throat irritation. Those with pre-existing respiratory conditions could be susceptible to more long term effects.

In addition to having negative effects on the human population, volcanic ash has also been proven to be harmful to livestock. The ash has been observed causing cosmetic damage, such as abrasion of the teeth, as well as more dire impacts like fluorine poisoning from the heightened levels of hydrogen fluoride found in volcanic debris. Following the 1995 Mount Ruapehu eruptions in New Zealand, two thousand sheep died after being affected by fluorosis while grazing on land littered with the ash. The added weight of ash in the animals’ wool also led to widespread fatigue affecting the flocks. Observations of Anak Krakatau could be hinting toward a major eruption as the volcanology office in Bandung has recorded almost 90 eruptions per day over the past week. In addition, Nurhuda added that the volcano has been observed spewing red hot lava up almost 1000 feet above its peak in recent days. A major eruption of the tiny island volcano would be the first one for Indonesia since the eruption of Mount Merapi. In October 2010, the Indonesian government sounded the alarm regarding Mount Merapi and warned villagers in threatened areas to move to safe areas. The evacuation orders affected at least 19,000 people, but by the time volcanic activity had subsided, over 350,000 people were displaced.

The eruptions would eventually claim the lives of 353 people with a number of victims succumbing to severe burns and some bodies being found on the volcano’s slopes. The mountain continued to erupt until November 2010 and on December 3rd the official alert status was reduced to level 3, from level 4, the highest possible level. After the eruptions at Mount Merapi subsided, officials declared them the worst the country had seen since the 1870s. In addition to death, damage and displacement, the volcanic activity also disrupted air travel, grounding flights from Indonesia and Australia for over a month.

Quite alarmist article I wonder how accurate it is. I wonder what Erik Klemetti thinks of it who also has a blog eruptions on the same site. Anyway a new web page on Mt Rainer has been released by the USGS http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mount_rainier/

A recent visit to Anaka Krakatua http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/krakatau/news/15030/Krakatau-volcano-Indonesia-report-from-3-4-Sep.html

Etna SE crater maybe waking up again plus small earth quakes in Valle De Bove http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/current-activity.html

Well, the article also says that pressure is not the only cause for an eruption.

I would guess that a VEI4 is the most that Mount Fuji could give but even a VEI3 eruption would look spectacular thanks to its height!
