May 2010 summary and statistics for Lampeter, Ceredigion

    Summary

Dry and quite sunny, average temperatures.

A nice dry month with plenty of sunshine. The driest May locally since 2005, it would have been even drier were it not for 12mm rain falling early on June 1st. Much of the first half was on the cool side, while the second half was average to warm.

1st - 17th: An often cool northerly flow with sunny spells. Rather unsettled at times, although just trifling amounts of rainfall. The first thunder of 2010 occurred on the 1st which also happened to be a rare warmish day (16c) for the first half of the month. Occasional frosts at night, the lowest was -1.8c on the 4th.

    18th - 19th : Warmer at last still a little rain around.

20th - 25th : Warm to very warm and very sunny. A sudden appearance of Summer with the magic 80f reached (22nd)! Coolish nights still though.

26th - 31st : Temperatures returned to around the average or even rather cool. Mostly dry with sunny spells although fairly wet on the 29th. Wet after midnight on the 31st, but of course it has to count towards May’s rain and not June’s!

A drier than average month with a cold first half and warm second half giving near average overall temperatures. A cold and wet start followed by a long dry spell with below average temperatures up to the 16th. Temperatures then recovered, with a notable warm spell under cloudless skies from the 22nd to the 24th and a warmer than average final week. Interestingly the coldest daytime and night time temperatures were both lower than for April. And nearly all the rain we had fell at weekends B)
