Just a suggestion. Many people have supported the idea.

Could it be done?

He's still working at the Met Office isn't he?

He is now on 'backroom' duties for the MetO. I guess if members want to have a whip 'round, he might do a spot or two?

I'd just like him contributing to the forum. It would make the whole experience a lot more interesting to have a famous face actually answering questions/making observations. Same for Michael Fish

Probably not likely since we already Michael Fish. Paul has to pay for him to be here doesn't he?

I doubt he will pay for Rob as well, but hey! Don't ask, don't get. Worth a shot. :)

This is a great idea imo :smiliz19: but it would be nice aswell as doing forecasts like Michael Fish he could contribute to the forum which would be much better than just producing forecasts once a week

Very true, although it could get a little embarrassing. The standard of posting in the Model Discussion area can be cringe-worthy at times, beyond the regular respected contributors.

I too think it would be a good idea but he does still work for the MET office. I was upset to learn they had axed him so made a complaint to the BBC......below reply from them............

Thank you for your comments.

The BBC weather presenters are professional forecasters employed by the Met Office and based at the BBC. Following a competitive tender process, the BBC recently awarded a new contract to the Met Office for the supply of weather services. As part of its new contract the Met Office has made a few changes to the on-air forecasting team to ensure it could maintain high standards of consistency and accuracy. Familiar faces will continue to provide up-to-date weather forecasts and analysis for our audiences.

Thanks again for taking the time to contact us.

Kind Regards

I'm sorry, but some of the presenters are just that - presenters. I don't accept that they are all clued up Meteorologists for one second, especially the regional ones.

Backtrack? Sorry, but I didn't realise you were expecting a reply!

If Rob McElwee wants to join Netweather, I'm sure we'd all welcome him with open arms and he would be a fantastic addition to the forum.

I suppose to answer your question as to whether he could be signed up, I'm sure it could. As to whether is would happen....an entirely different question altogether, not least for the fact that I would imagine Mr McElwee is perfectly content being fully employed still!

No doubt when Paul's back he'll check to see what ideas you've come up with while he's been away.

On the BBC website it has a list of all the presenters and their backgrounds.

Cheers guys. :)

Yeah I guess he's still employed, but it wouldn't hurt to make all of his fans on here happy.

As expected, none of the Midlands Today presenters are proper Meteorologists!

As I'd half-expected (as I find the local North East & Cumbria broadcasts pretty good), all four of the regional North East & Cumbria presenters are proper meteorologists, so some regions clearly got luckier than others!

We are quite lucky in Wales then, with Derek especially.

Simon Keeling off Weatheronline used to do Midlands Today forecasts, but sadly doesn't seem to do them anymore. Shefali Oza just reads scripts that the Met Office seem to have given her 6 hours earlier (some forecasts she has made were horrendously out of date and inevitably wrong).

Is the answer to the question of this thread not a bit like asking could Lionel Messi sign for Portsmouth FC?

Yeah it would be like getting Jurgen Klinsmann to sign for Tottenham Hotspur :whistling:

I'll pay £5 a month to see his forcasts in the depths of winter £6 if he winks (11p in summer)

As a Director of Netweather I have to say it is a nice idea, one we would love to see it happen one day.

I have called his relevant managers and directors to see what contractual obligations would need to be met and if we would need to step in with some additional finance. It's a long shot, but like I say one that would really make some headlines.

The immediate response was quite warm, and we have spoken to his representatives a number of times over the past month and things were looking good. But now it seems that he doesn't want to take the position.

Sad really, Lionel Messi would have been great for Portsmouth after all they've been through.
