Just got back to the office from Hants, plenty of sunshine and showers. Haven't had a chance to look at radar or detectors - whats occurring? :unknw:

Diurnally driven showers are producing almost no sferics at the moment. Though the number and intensity is heading in the right direction.

CZ up across NE England/SE Scotland earlier, along with a last ditch intensification of the rain-mass east of the Thames Estuary, produced a fair few sferics earlier.

Hmmm, still plenty of time to go. :good:

Just seen NW extra radar has one strike over Frant way - well it's a start!

Close sferics coming from showers inland from here near Aberystwyth.

'near tunbridge wells' would have done but thanks! :good:

 I like to give the full story! As the NW headline says today - short sharp showers, but no bangs yet.

I'm not entirely sure what happened at 15.10 but my road was on the edge of a downpour with rain rates around 100mm per hour while here

it was raining gently.

I think it must have just produced an extremely strong downdraught but on a day with a generally light breeze, even during the showers, there

was a sudden gust which was much stronger than gale force. I rushed to the front door to look outside in time to see trees a few hundred

yards away being blown very harshly before returning to their normal position.

I can't think it would have been anything tornadic but certainly a very strong convective downdraught gust.

I'm super new to this but if i'm reading them correctly, the current CAPE charts are showing some quite tasty looking conditions, ripe for storms this evening..... especially in the South East, you lucky devils :)

I haven't got the detailed 12Z sounding for Herstmonceux, but the Nottingham one doesn't make especially pretty reading:

I haven't got the detailed 12Z sounding for Herstmonceux, but the Nottingham one doesn't make pretty reading:

According to GFS (if it is to be believed) Nottingham was just outside of the area most likely to see reasonable/decent convection today.

Furthermore, GFS has recently (i.e the past couple of days) pointed towards CAPE peaking (as it often does) between 3 and 6pm. In the last half an hour or so, convection has really taken off across southern areas of England. I would anticipate this to develop into something interesting (or more interesting) as it drifts east with the CAPE/LI maxima forecast to be in the next few hours.

That aside, I am not overly encouraged by the lack of sferics where the beefy showers are developing at the moment. If it is still this quiet by 5pm I'll readily start losing hope.

Waiting for the rain band to clear (BBC Look East said 4pm, so it's got precisely one minute :D ) but would expect any showers to be fairly infrequent (if any) now. Still, 2hrs of light to moderate rain, mustn't grumble rolleyes.gif

Forecast CAPE isn't great, but may have been superseded already?

The weather has been split personality today. It's literally been downpour, sunny, downpour, sunny, downpour, sunny.

That's why I choose this version of the soundings, as the right hand side tells you what indices are showing what potential results (see the comments column). :good:
