I take it you mean the upper air temps are dropping 1-2c? It's just looking at the charts they will go up if the low stays on the same track!!

Will evaporative cooling not have an effect in the heavier showers? Maybe this is why?

Does this storm look like it will hit France instead? (thur/fri) I have very vivid memories of being stuck in Paris Dec 1999. We took the little one (big now) to Disneyland for Christmas, never have I been so scared in my life. The destruction was devestating. I beleive it was called a lothar storm. A lot of people where killed due to that storm.

I found this

Let's hope Thurs/Fri system does not repeat this event, it is an interesting analog.

Looking around on line some further information shows you remembered the name correctly SL.

Today's event has been named Hergen by fu-Berlin and it looks like Joachim is the next on the list for the storm due at the end of the week..

Models do seem quite keen on there being heavy snow for higher ground today and tonight so the current precip moving into western Scotland but think the models maybe slightly off with just how much asnow they do end up producing from this set-up, temps really don't look all that supportive I've got to admit.

I don't understand why the Met Office are forecasting snow down to 100m, it's going to be more like 400m going by the charts!! When the heavier precip moves in later the upper temps will rise I think it will be a rain and wind event for most!! Northern England will hold onto the cold uppers for a longer period!!!

There was snow lying this morning at my mum's up in Highland Perthshire at 100 mtrs asl. Not sure if was to last though as it was pretty wet. Temp was around 1c at 9AM there.

Here only rain showers blowing in with the cold and gusty wind.

Temp 3.4c and dew point -5.5c. Gust 44.9mph recently. Pressure now at 966mb here, which is considerably lower than last Thursday in these parts. Had a couple of sharp showers this morning, both containing snow.

Very heavy hail shower passing by now, thought I heard thunder but think it might have been the wind. Very gusty now!

Every time the MetOffice start changing the colour of their warnings, I think of this..."Blue Alert"

[Apologies to anyone who isn't a Dwarfer !]

North face of Caerketton in the Pentlands has just re-emerged with a light dusting of snow (the place where the photo earlier of Edinburgh was taken from!)

Gusty and windy here. XC says 36mph ave, gusting to 48; pressure 967, temp +4 and dew point -1, down from 0 a short while ago. Dark and lowering and feels like precipitation's on its way... pleeease let it snow!

Snowing here very lightly, difficult to make it out as getting whipped in all directions by the wind which is strengthening now.

Pretty similar to last Thursday for here ..http://www.xcweather.co.uk/

Gusts Nearly above 100 mph again... http://bit.ly/uxK1pb and http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=current;type=maxg
