Gordon's peak was 95kts, and the hurricane is down to 85kts now. The eye is much less defined as shear increases over the hurricane. Weakening is expected to continue from here on in, but Gordon should still be a hurricane as it passes over the Azores.

The right curve in Gordon I would guess is a given-estimate until further analysis of the system is apparent. We have the Theta-plume moving north along the current LP situated between Iceland and Scotland which will no doubt have a mid-level influence on where Gordon ends up.

Hopefully the hand-over to European/British agencies will be slightly less abrasive as the last Gordon/Irene event.

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Gordon sped across the Atlantic early Sunday toward the eastern Azores islands, where a hurricane warning is in effect, U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Gordon was centered about 340 miles (550 kms) west-southwest of Sao Miguel Island in the Azores as of 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT). It added that Gordon remained a Category 2 hurricane with top sustained winds of 100 mph (155 kph) and higher gusts. The hurricane, which formed on Saturday, was moving toward the east at 23 mph (37 kph).

The hurricane was on a forecast track expected to take it near or over the islands of the eastern Azores early Monday. Forecasters said that while the Gordon was expected to weaken somewhat Sunday, it still was expected to be a hurricane pasing near or acrosss the eastern Azores. Portugal's government, meanwhile, has discontinued a hurricane warning for the central Azores.

Forecasters said Gordon, on an eastward track in the pre-dawn hours, was expected to turn toward the east-northeast later Sunday. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 35 miles (55 kms) from the center and tropical storm force winds reached outward up to 125 miles (205 kphs).

Gordon's dangerous surf and ocean swells could reach the central and eastern Azores on Sunday afternoon and heavy rains were expected, the Miami forecasting center said. Gordon became a hurricane on Saturday even as onetime Tropical Storm Helene swiftly weakened into a tropical depression as it lumbered ashore on Mexico's Gulf Coast and degenerated into a rain storm without reports of significant damage.

Hurricane Gordon causes minor damage in Azores, losing intensity

Hurricane Gordon caused only minor flooding and power outages as it hit the two eastern-most islands of Portugal's Azores archipelago early on Monday and was losing its strength as it headed towards continental Europe.

Gordon was expected to weaken to a post-tropical cyclone later in the day, according to forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Centre in Miami. There was little property damage aside from some broken doors and windows, and no reports of injuries in the Azores, about 1,000 miles west of the Portuguese coast. The Atlantic islands are a popular tourism destination and are particularly busy at this time of year.

Power supply was re-established after brief outages in a few locations, but some roads remained blocked by fallen trees. "We were ready for the worst, but luckily it wasn't as bad as expected," said Jose Bolieiro, mayor of the archipelago's largest city of Ponta Delgada, on the eastern island of Sao Miguel. "We only had small damage from rain and winds." Civil protection services had been put on alert before Gordon made landfall on the islands of Santa Maria and Sao Miguel, but were stood down after the hurricane passed, local officials said. Winds blew at 75 mph (120 km/h), with gusts reaching 105 mph (170 km/h).

Gordon had lost intensity after passing over colder waters before hitting the Azores and was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane from Category 2. Category 1 hurricanes have enough strength to uproot trees, blow off poorly attached roof tiles and cause coastal flooding and power outages.

Met Office surface obs has post-Gordon running up through Spain and into central France on Friday, possibly the nothern half of this hitting the south depending on the speed of the low coming in from the Atlantic. Looks to be a close-run affair with Gordon being resigned to a typical LP area however.
