THE CONVECTIVE STRUCTURE OF SANDY HAS DETERIORATED TODAY...EVEN AS

THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS CONTINUED TO SLOWLY FALL...SUGGESTING THAT

THE CONVECTION IS NO LONGER DRIVING THE BUS. THE INTENSIFICATION

OBSERVED THIS MORNING WAS ASSOCIATED WITH STRONG WINDS OCCURRING TO

THE SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER...OUTSIDE OF THE CENTRAL CORE...AND WAS

ALMOST CERTAINLY DUE TO BAROCLINIC FORCING. IN ADDITION...AIRCRAFT

DATA INDICATE THAT THERE ARE STRONG TEMPERATURE CONTRASTS VERY NEAR

A MODEST RESIDUAL WARM CORE. WATER VAPOR IMAGERY INDICATES THAT

SANDY IS BECOMING ABSORBED WITHIN A LARGE MID-LATITUDE CYCLONIC

CIRCULATION. ALL OF THESE CONSIDERATIONS LEAD US TO CONCLUDE THAT

THE MOST APPROPRIATE CLASSIFICATION AT ADVISORY TIME IS

EXTRATROPICAL. HOWEVER...FOR CONTINUITY OF SERVICE NHC WILL

CONTINUE TO ISSUE ADVISORIES THROUGH LANDFALL. A POST-STORM

ANALYSIS WILL RE-EXAMINE THE TIMING OF EXTRATROPICAL TRANSITION.

Snow now as far north as the area west of Johnstown.

Pressure dropped to 946mb's and winds to 85mph. I don't think that will change the hige surge on the way for some places!

Also, someone just tweeted that "FDNY responding to report of a 4-story apartment building collapse in Chelsea, Manhattan."

I'm not sure I believe that 231mph record.

Surely it would destroy any wonder meter and buildings would be ripped from their foundations.

Sound like a tall tale that suits the Americans always doing everything bigger than everyone else.

Whats been the most recent record for high windspeed?

With these factors combined, winds exceeding hurricane force occur an average of 110 days per year. The primary summit building was designed to withstand 300 mph (480 km/h) winds; other structures are literally chained to the mountain.

Some impressive winds being reported, looks like winds are fairly close to what the SE of England had in the 1987 system.

Now extra-tropical, but thats not making any difference now.

By the way, Battery now over 11.6ft, should go well over 12ft even without ANY additional surge increases. Flooding in lower level Manhatten is going to be pretty bad.

We already have landfall? Tide peak still to come but transition from 'Cane to storm now in progress (though still a remnant 'warm core' in there somewhere!).

Smashing the record of 11.2ft set in 1821!

Now at 12.09ft!

Now surpassing 12ft at the Battery, and still rising. CNBC anchor was mentioning water pouring into the subway system not too long ago.

I think most (if not all) cams are down for now, given the huge interest all across the world aswell as the fact much of downtown NYC is now out of power anyway. Just relying on RT sources, twitter reports, and streaming forums myself.

Turning off power in Lower Manhattan..surge and tide now surpassing past records and still a foot of tide to go!

I am sure the centre is on land and now no longer a 'cane but a 'superstorm'?
