An Army dog trained to sniff out explosives was today posthumously awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross for the work he did in detecting bombs and hidden weapons in Afghanistan.

Theo, a 22-month-old springer spaniel, died of a seizure shortly after his handler, Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, was shot dead by Taleban insurgents on March 1 last year while on patrol in Helmand province.

The pair, said to have been inseparable, were credited with a record number of bomb finds in a Ministry of Defence press release just weeks before they died.
