Maybe there was a warm sector earlier on as the main band of ppn arrived which has now mixed out after meeting the cold air.

*edit* Just seen Joe Blogg's post. Definitely would explain the rain/sleet/ice pellets

Got to be a warm layer and if the snow is light enough it's melting it then when it turns heavy enough it's cooling the warm air to allow to get to ground level. Does that make sense?

well it definately wasnt snow, dont forget people at same elevation as me in places like east stockport and macclesfield having rain, i THINK it is snow again now but after whats happened i dont trust this at all, there may be droplets of water mixed in with flakes.

Cfallon in Saddleworth has whiteout conditions, very odd.

It's certainly a weird one out there tonight, there appears to be some very localised heavy snow, yet just a few miles either side it's either rain or sleet.

The flakes are just so big. I have genuinely seen some nearly as big as potato waffles come down. I hope this lasts for a while, it would make my winter.

Proper Quaver crisp size flakes!! :D

Definitely snow here at 210m asl, even though it sounds like there's graupels mixed in with the stuff. Buxton reporting 4ft drifts is believable having gone over the A5004 (long hill) earlier this afternoon before the snows came. Something in the order of 2 inches evident on the rooftops here.

Not odd that you have those conditions as I have, odd feb1991 hasn't.

One weird event this. 5.30pm minor covering in Stockport...sleet/snow/rain mix..drove west on the M60 whiteout conditions, heavy snow lying even in the middle verge A roads closer to home. A first for me, almost always the exact opposite.

I am at the lowest part though, elevation varies from 600ft to 1200ft though, definately flakes coming down now again, we still have had an accumulation but it definately turned sleety and there was a period when i could not see anything lamposting, now it could have been jack and not rain but given the orange was over me on the radar then very strange, slowed right down again now.

Its absolutely hammering it down with snow now. Was only a few hours ago it as practically raining.

For those to the east still getting sleet/rain, don't worry, the whire stuff's on its way!
