Beautiful morning here. Minus 2.4, feels like about -8! Not a hint of moisture outside. Would have been amazing if it we'd had a heavy shower last night.

A few more snow showers overnight and early this morning gave another 1.5cm. Drifts up to 1m deep on the tops where the middle of the fields have been scoured to a 1-2 cm layer of ice which formed when the snow first began to settle on the wet ground and then froze.

Last night was the coldest in March since 1986 here.

A very cold day; the lowest March maximum on my 50 years of records if it doesn't get any higher by 0900 tomorrow.

A day of sunny intervals and short but occasionally quite heavy snow showers, particularly this afternoon when some of them were squally and resulted in temporary white-outs as the wind gusted over 50 mph and picked up the lying snow.

The temperature fell to -5.1c in the screen during a shower at 1625 with a gust of 56 mph around the same time. This resulted in a wind chill value ( according to the Davis method of calculation) of -25c.

At 1800;

Temp; -4.0c

Max' today; -2.1c

Min' last night; -5.6c

Grass ( snow ) min; -8.1C

Rainfall from 0900-1800; 0.9 mm (reading probably rather low due to snow blowing out of gauge )

Sunshine today; 4.40 hrs

Mean wind speed; 29 mph NE

Highest gust today; 56 mph NE at 1624

7 oktas Cu

Moderate snow shower just starting

Vis; 5 km

Mean depth of undrifted snow; 6.5cm. Drifts to 1m in exposed areas with constant low level blowing snow.

Wow TM ! That is something re lowest March min for 50 yrs, but not hard to believe as today has been like a severe mid-winter cold spell, even the upper 850's were lower than winter 09/10 ! My values are not far off your's today, my records only go back 4 years, but have lived here all my life ( 40yr) your records are invaluable to me as a guide to this area.

Blimey what an amazing day up there in the peak. Even here in the Trent valley it has been bitterly cold, obviously not as intense, though during a moderate snow shower this morning the temperature dipped to -3.0c with a wind chill according to my station of -10.9c. The wind was gusting to around 36mph. Only a dusting of snow around here currently.

Aye Paul it really did feel like the depths of winter today. I'm hopeful the March max' record will fall as it's currently -4.6c according to the Davis on the roof and the screen temp' is usually a few tenths lower.

Incidentally at the Cat and Fiddle ( which records only to the nearest whole degree unfortunately ) it was -6 or -7 for most of the day with a max' of -5c and the wind averaging around 30 mph.

Max Gust: 30mph

Mean Wind: 15mph NE
