Persistent light snow still this morning, although it is definitely brightening up. A couple of inches on the grass here which isn't bad for Cumbria, especially in March. The Lake District really does look beautiful in the snow, I haven't seen it like this for a couple of years.

Looking like our chances increase from midweek according to some on model threads. If you are looking for deep snow today head for ladycross near slaley. Around a foot there as of thursday and road should be fine. Plus if its open rookhope to allenheads road should be fun.

The answer to every "are we going to get snow in the North East" question is ...

No.

So no.

No, no snow.

Will we be getting any convective showers next week? Looks like just about every other region has had it's share of this historic snow event, meh!

There could well be as they are difficult to forecast. I doubt they would be of any significance though.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Remaining very cold, especially in the brisk winds. Scattered wintry showers, especially in the east, some turning heavy towards midweek. Widespread, penetrating night frosts, locally severe.

If you want to see some epic snow - way above Dec 2010 at low levels at least - look at:

and this post in particular (from NE Wales)

Met office short term outlook has flipped back to cold again but we could escape the wet weather over Easter good.gif

UK Outlook for Thursday 28 Mar 2013 to Saturday 6 Apr 2013:

Many areas starting dry with some sunny spells, though still a few snow showers possible in the east. Cloudier, windier and more unsettled conditions are then likely to spread slowly north or northeastwards into and across a good deal of the UK during Easter Weekend. Risk then of this wet weather starting off as snow away from southern and southwestern UK. Meanwhile, northern and northeastern UK may well escape this wet weather and instead remain drier and brighter over Easter. Generally cold for the time of year later next week and through Easter Weekend, southern parts perhaps then slowly turning less cold though. Looking ahead into early April, conditions are most likely to be on the unsettled side, especially to the south and west, with below average temperatures for many.

So what you mean is, we will still have cold weather but yet again we'll miss out on the snow.

Sorry, but how is this good news, Gavin? You can't even put it down to your liking for mild weather!

Good luck with that in a biting wind and with frozen ground.

Nick have a ride up to Woodland via toft Hill road.

Just come back from Cumbria via A69 then A68. There's significant drifts, more there than most of Cumbria and best location on the NE.

Max yesterday -1.1C, today is not hot above -1.9C

The met office have issued an Ice warning for the NE

Issued at: 12:08 on Saturday 23rd March 2013

Valid from: 00:05 on Sunday 24th March 2013

Valid to: 09:00 on Sunday 24th March 2013

Lying snow in many areas will melt on roads and pavements by day, refreezing by night to give icy patches. In addition, further mostly light snow is expected in places, giving accumulations of a few cm locally, mainly over eastern England. Also, snow blowing off fields in strong to gale force winds will affect some roads, especially over high ground.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A frontal system will remain slow-moving across central and northwestern parts of the UK during Saturday, slowly weakening though capable of giving fresh accumulations into the night time period. A lot of snow has fallen in places across the region, and for many areas, especially northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, extra accumulations will be insignificant compared with what has already fallen.

Areas affected

Darlington, Durham, Gateshead, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, South Tyneside, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland

Longer term met office outlook has snow remaining possible into April but this time mainly on the hills and mountains before it eventually turns more unsettled which would suggest less cold air will spread in

UK Outlook for Sunday 7 Apr 2013 to Sunday 21 Apr 2013:

Southern parts of the UK are likely to be unsettled with rainfall amounts possibly above average, especially at first. Temperatures here then close to or just below average through much of this period, though probably not as cold as conditions currently are. Further north, and particularly in the northeast, colder than average conditions with often frosty nights are likely from the start. Rainfall amounts then probably close to or below average at first with further snowfall possible, mainly on hills and mountains. Signs, then, of conditions here turning more unsettled later.
