We now have official blizzard comditions, very small flakes but coming down with intensity and blowing around in the stron to gale force winds. Depth of snow is hard to work out now due to drifting but I would say 3-4cm of level snow at bestt

Still coming down, powdery sort of stuff, although it's sliding off cars and you can hear dripping. Probably be gone before too long tomorrow

Hopefully the fact that I'm slightly further in land will make a difference for me here, if Backtrack now comes in with a negative update I'm probably screwed however.

I've seen some crap snow 'events' in my time but this has to be up there with one of the worst. At least the ones where rain fell instead of snow, there was a good reason for it being such. Today and tonight is just a weird occurrence with places near the coast getting 5 inches and heavy snow falling out of light radar returns. Can't get my head around it personally.

I just wonder whether the heavier stuff that pushed up the western side of the region earlier managed to put down a foundation which has allowed subsequent lighter falls to readily accumulate? Whereas the lighter stuff is just melting into a sodden ground here.

I agree with the weirdness of the ppn today. I'm outside the amber, roughly 25 miles inland and have as much snow as Spurry looking at the pics. I know 7 miles east in Prestwich there wasn't any snow this morning, yet we had a dusting.

Delighted many have seen a decent amount of snow, sadly a non-event so far here. Hoping that something might develop overnight but not looking likely now.

Met office has Liverpool as light snow from now till midnight (which is currently accurate). Then back to heavy snow from midnight to 6am. From the radars does anyone think this is accurate?

Yes, there are a lot of misery guts on this thread tonight - moaning before the main course is served!

Diane Oxberry actually got this one right, saying even though there was a widespread risk of a lot of snow, exactly amounts in localities could vary a lot.

8" of snow melt at 0.7C? Yeah good luck with that.

THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS. THERE IS 8" PICS TO FOLLOW. P.s, it's still snowing hard.

GFS & NAE both still have us under precipitation until 3am Sunday. Many Met office forecasts predict precipitation throughout tomorrow.

Just how long could this last for?

Just looked out of the bedroom window and watched a snow plough trying to clear a road up the hill from us and it must have made at least 10 attempts before it could cut through it.

There must be some serious drifts about now.

The wind has picked up once more, hopefully it won't spoil the Narnia-esque landscape outside. I'm really looking forward to seeing the mountains clocked in snow in the morning! :D

I would guesstimate a lot of the disappointment so far is due to people forgetting we are currently in a zonality clash, behind the front is warm air (some of which has advected over the NW meaning lower levels for a time will see nothing but sleet). The cold air WILL win the battle however so expect to see this zonality change more towards our favor in the early hours.

Current 850hpa temps shows the battleline ongoing.

lol sorry BT that looks about 5-10cm if that!

Looking at the radar though I wouldn't be at all surprised if you saw 30cm but your pictures don't really convey that.

You're joking right? I've just took the dog, it comes more than a couple of inches over my ankles!

I'm gonna get the ruler instead of guessing, hold on.
