Can you please cease bickering!Posted Image

I mean, it's in the Autumn section thread of which this is a sub-thread?

Not bickering, just thought some folk may not be able to find this because it's not in a winter thread?

I'm sure they would be able to, but just in case?

Merry Christmas to you all anyway and may the storms b***er off and let us all have a good one :-)

After a crisp, clear morning in the cold sector the squally showers and more strong gusts are now reaching Sunderland.  I notice there have been a couple of sferics near Durham and also in the south west this afternoon.  It looks like an almighty blizzard up in northwest Scotland - hope you guys are all safe up there and ride this out with as much as possible intact.

I took a screen grab from Sat24 from earlier on - as Liam Dutton said on Twitter "beautiful but dangerous":

What a bizarre storm this is turning out to be

The far south coast - south-east seemed to get hit hardest (furthest away from the low)

Normally, you expect places nearer the center to get the worst of it

I hope these storms do bugger off, so we can just focus on Christmas, and chill

And then people are saying how the southerners have hyped this storm up.  Please people get a bloody grip.

More damage occurs down south because they don't get storms like this often, so what's ready to come down comes down all in one go,  whereas up here we see them pretty often and the damage is more spread out, repairs happen more often so the problems are more kept on top of. Certainly has been overhyped for us up here. The south just got what we've been getting up here for the past month. Just been at friends who live about 1000ft ASL, very exposed. Nothing out of the ordinary up there either for winter storm weather.

A shortwave developed off of the main low, creating a pressure trough which then zipped across southern areas. On the leading edge, the isobars squeeze together further, hence an amber warning being issued for the SE. :) Edited by Mapantz

...even that seems to have been downgraded...it was going to be the Mother of all UK lows the other day...now chief forecaster at the met says...'Relative to recent storms that have affected the UK, Friday's depression is looking less intense and the extent of associated impacts are currently thought to be less widespread and less severe'

Think they are tempting fate by underestimating Fridays storm already. A lot of factors to get through yet which could alter the trend of this incoming storm greatly. A few hundred miles south, then this will have us gritting our teeth!

Southern Electric say 70,000 homes remain without power after storms, and some may not get it back in time for Christmas Day

From Peter Kirk on Twitter:

"Low just NW of Scotland down to 927hPa per the 12Z Met Office FAX chart"

That makes it only the 7th Mid Latitude Cyclone ever recorded in the North Atlantic to fall below 930mb. Stunning to look at on satellite imagery too.
