Red warning extends inland as far as Preston area, Southport, Lancaster, Morecambe, Blackpool, Fleetwood and parts of the Furness peninsula all within the area - as well as parts of NW Wales.  Looks fairly serious now.

Shipping forecast for the Irish Sea

Irish Sea

Gale warnings - Issued: 0820 UTC Wed 12 Feb

Severe gale force 9 veering southwesterly and increasing hurricane force 12 imminent

Shipping Forecast - Issued: 0405 UTC Wed 12 Feb Wind South veering southwest 6 to gale 8, increasing severe gale 9 to violent storm 11. Sea State Moderate or rough, becoming very rough or high, then very high in south for a time. Weather Rain or showers. Visibility Good, becoming moderate.

Yep, it doesn't often read much more extreme than that. Interesting that the gale warnings differ from the winds in the main shipping forecast bulletin. As the gale warnings were issued later, this suggests an upgrade to me. Exciting.

Bear in mind it's the GFS, and it doesn't take note of small changes, so it could be wrong, but it's definitely gone in that direction.. is it overplaying a downgrade, or is it correct? I don't know but it slackens the isobars over our region and widens the lows centre. It may be wrong?

Anyhow if anyone local wants to feel the full fury of a westerly gale, go to Oldfield Road in Heswall, it's situated high up overlooking the River Dee with nothing but estuary and open sea for miles.. it's not unusual for that site to get over 80mph gusts.

Sounds fun. I might head out to Crosby beach this evening, tide will be coming in then as well, might see some good waves, if I don't get blown away first!

It doesn't get much more severe, expect some very severe weather later this afternoon and into the evening. The red warning just touches S Cumbria and we are covered by a yellow and an amber warning across the region.

Some models showing 97mph gusts across the northern/central swathe of the UK. Shifting the stronger winds further East by 40mi than what the meto warnings are currently out for.

HIGHEST RED ALERT for N WALES/NW ENGLAND

Met Office have issued the highest alert level for a storm that will be extremely dangerous giving a risk to life. This in in line with where we expect the most damaging winds. Take precautions and do not travel if you are in these areas.

The red warning barely touches Merseyside, I think it just touches Southport.. 99% of Merseyside is in the Amber warning, and in my opinion doesn't warrant a red warning. Lancashire however, does warrant a red warning though, due to exposure.
