It looks like the ill fated Beagle has now been found on Mars, so it is not necessarily a complete disaster.

Seen that earlier, it also looks as though it wasn't a crashed landing either, everything went normal, except it only opened itself by half instead of full and the signal went dead.

 

Still.. Landing something on Mars is a feat in it's own right.

Indeed, I was reading about it earlier, when you take the find and its apparent good shape into consideration it really is a shame it fell foul of some technicallity at the final hurdle.  Colin (R.I.P.) and his team should be proud they got this far, lets remember space exploration is still a new thing in the grand scheme of things, and for it's day getting it built and to Mars for £50m is a staggering achievement.  Would like to see someone else do any better with the limited funds and tech of the day.
