Seems to be a large, heavy shower forming behind the main clump that could hit coastal areas if this track continues.

I'm in West Boldon and the current shower has deposited close to a CM although think some of it may be the graupel type? so very heavy in other words.  Some more packing in behind but will fizzle out soon so very transient today.

Melt on. Any chance of some new snow tonight?

I think most of the showers will die away as the winds will drop. Ice will be the problem overnight as a hard frost will develop. Could be some impressive low temperatures. A possibility of some snow tomorrow as this cold front moves in from the west, but I suspect any snow will be confined to high ground. Still a fair bit of uncertainty with this so keep an eye on the models and latest forecasts :-)

Falling and settling snow certainly brightens up a Monday morning!

Very minimal covering however.

Cold but fine today with increasing cloud amounts later... sun out already but frosty to start. Rain overnight from the west with bits of sleet/snow mixed in over higher ground, as we head through wednesday it may change more to snow lower down as it moves away?!

Mild weekend still on the cards with temps in double figures maybe.

Yes for lower parts cold rain looks likely most of tomorrow but maybe turning to snow for a time tomorrow evening before clearing away

Snow warning issued for Durham and Northumberland

Issued at:1041 on Tue 16 Feb 2016

Valid from:0010 on Wed 17 Feb 2016

Valid to:1000 on Wed 17 Feb 2016

Outbreaks of rain are likely to turn to sleet or snow in places later on Tuesday night and during Wednesday morning, giving local accumulations. This will be primarily, but not exclusively, over the higher ground where 2 to 6 cm may accumulate, although parts of the warning area may escape. At lower elevations, a slushy cover of up to a centimetre or so is possible. Please be aware of the potential for some difficult driving conditions overnight and into the Wednesday morning rush hour.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

The active frontal system which brings rain on Tuesday will increasingly come into contact with colder air, with the likelihood that it will start to turn to sleet or snow in places early on Wednesday. The situation is finely balanced, and the precipitation may remain as rain over parts of the area. This warning is likely to be updated.

Rain here this morning and looks more like staying that way today apart from some sleet/snow on higher ground as snow risk will be further south tonight. So a wet and cold day for many but improving from the north slowly.

Mild but windy weekend with some rain around before a return to the cooler conditions with the risk of more wintry weather at times.

Cold rain is all we're likely to see today this rain should start and clear by mid afternoon so the chances of it turning to snow are very slim away from high ground mind even if it did turn to snow it wouldn't settle given the wet ground

Much better tomrrow with light winds again and sunshine

Some reports in the Scottish thread of snow down to quite low levels,so maybe one or two surprises for some of us later as the colder air continues to undercut from the North-West.

Ice warning issued

Issued at:1041 on Wed 17 Feb 2016

Valid from:2000 on Wed 17 Feb 2016

Valid to:1000 on Thu 18 Feb 2016

Rain and some hill snow will clear from the west during the course of Wednesday evening, with the cloud thinning to allow the temperature to fall below freezing overnight and at first on Thursday morning. Please be aware of the risk of ice on untreated surfaces.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A frontal system will produce a good deal of rain through Wednesday afternoon and evening, with some snow over the hills, chiefly in Wales, the north Midlands and northern England, which may give a covering in places. Surfaces will remain wet into the night, such that as the temperature falls below freezing, ice is likely to form on untreated roads and pavements. Upland areas in the north and west of the Warning area are at risk during Wednesday evening with other areas at increasing risk later in the night and at first on Thursday morning.

Covers

Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton-on-Tees, Sunderland, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside

Cold and icy start in places but blue skies and lots of dry weather.

Weekend looking not as mild as first thought and wind will take edge of temperature, some rain around too from time to time.

Beyond this certainly on the cool to cold side into march.

What a bloody glorious day today, clear blue skies, and although not warm (6c) it still seemed pleasant enough.

Nothing warm or even mild in the forecast ....

Cold and frosty start here this morning again but not as sunny with rain moving in from west although always more patchy to the east.

looking more unsettled as we head through weekend and beyond with chance of some colder interludes with risk of snow over next few weeks... either from showers as systems move east and allow cold air to filter from north or from fronts bumping in to cold air over our region (all depends on timing and position)

As always we wont know for sure till nearer the time but the risk/chance is shown in many model output over past few days.

Main thing is nothing mild showing nor nothing really cold!

Joking aside, the wind has got up quite a bit the last hour or two. No frost tonight that's for sure.
