This area of storms has now moved to Turkey.

Some extraordinarily unseasonable temps in Greece right now, perhaps as extreme as the high-30s temps were in July, relative to the time of year. Very prolonged, too.

For example 27C tomorrow, and the lowest max temp in the next week in Thessaloniki is 21.  Next week in Thessaloniki is seeing conditions better than an average July in London. An extraordinarily warm 25C forecast for November 1st, hard to believe we're now rapidly approaching the winter solstice with those sorts of temps, and hard to believe with such warmth that the area can, on occasion, see heavy snow and sub-zero temps in winter. The mean max in Thessaloniki in Nov is apparently 15C, yet there have barely been even any days below 21 yet. The Greek summer just goes on, and on, and on, it seems - I wish I was there right now rather than the dull, rain-sodden UK with atrocious conditions look set to continue for another week.

October seems to be a replay of July, with extreme heat (for the time of year) in SE Europe and extreme rainfall in the NW.

Crete has registered a stunning 35.1C earlier today at Sisi WMO station from NOA.

This is a new European T record for November

Below Greece's highest monthly averages T's from the WMO network of the National Observatory of Athens.

Lindos and Kastelorizo dominate in summer and winter means and lows while Sparta dominates in summer maxes. Most mean and average lows are European records.

A noteworthy average max of 27.0C in Crete so far in November

I seriously doubt we ever had an area in Europe so far inside November to register an average max of 27C.

It's a first for Greece. Ts will cool down a bit the next few days all over Greece but we might still beat the 24C record avg high of 2019.

Cyprus, too, has been recording record breaking temperatures. I'm glad it's not just our imagination that November seems to be ever hotter. This is from 2nd November in Akrotiri:

"Met Office Akrotiri @MetOAkrotiri

More about our new Akrotiri November max temp (31.1°C) Some say it's boring, for us weather nerds a record max is the most exciting day of the year! The last and only time we broke 30°C was on 1st November 1992. Dating back to 1956, so only twice in almost 70 years!"

I’ve been to great beaches all over the planet but Greece especially around the Ionian Sea is my favourite 😀

Following up from a previous post where I hypothesized that areas further inland and North of Sparta would have higher summer average maxes.....

Well it appears that the National Observatory of Athens has been running a secondary Hydrometeorological station in the depths of the Evrotas Valley around 10 km North of Sparta the past 4 years. The station is placed on the ground on the bank of the Evrotas River for hydrological research purposes. Below some pics of the Evrotas station and its position relative to Sparta WMO met station.

And below is how Evrotas NOA station looks the past 4 years. Notice the particularly pronounced summer average highs. Especially that July 40.5C average max. Again we are talking about only 4 years of data and it is a secondary station so some caution is warranted. In any case it does seem to favour our hypothesis that the depths of the Evrotas Valley might just beat Cordoba at a European level when it comes to summer highs. Both Taygetos and Parnon mountains provide a constant foehn effect during the summer and this is particularly obvious from the Sparta WMO station data alone.

Judging by average highs and lows the location seems pretty continental for South Europe standards. What's your take?

Athens Heat I've spent quite a bit of time in Greece (Pieria) in recent summers, in a location close to the sea, and it certainly seems a much larger diurnal range than there.

Max above 40C is incredible (around 32c is what I'm used to in Pieria) but the nights are also relatively cool, below 20, while up there it's commonly still around 28C at around 2200 with minima often around 23.

Jan and Feb minima look comparable to many places in the UK.

Yeah big diurnal fluctuation mostly due to the valley effect. PIeria is completely different when compared with the geography of a valley or an inland location. The area seems very strong in maxes due to being far from the sea and blocked completely by Taygetos and Parnon mountains. Essentially no sea breeze can reach there.

Sparta which is the closest station to Evrotas has also a big diurnal range again due to being inland and at the valley.

Looks amazing!  Someone in Greece has summoned the Greek God Cerberus from the River Styx 😆
