Finally we have a named storm, with Storm Angus due to arrive on our shores from later today. Heavy rain and severe gales are expected.

If you're wondering about the storm naming convention for this year, take a look at Jo's blog.

Met office have tied their issuing of Names to Amber warnings for Storms. As the naming of storms is a media tool, it hasn't really work with Angus, missing Friday weekday coverage

The Amber warnings kick of various processes with councils and emergency services so can't be issued willynilly but a name for a storm has other uses, whilst still heightening awareness of incoming severe weather.

And this one is a bit uncertain still, in whether it comes off as an event or not. Could always do with the first one working out well with the forecast so the named storm idea gets support

At least it is in the SE this year after all those NW Britain storms from 2015/16

Angus has some beef with the South of the UK!

Some impressive rainfall totals being projected overnight, in to tomorrow.

Amber warning out

Issued at: 10:36 on Sat 19 Nov 2016

Valid from: 02:00 on Sun 20 Nov 2016

Valid to: 11:00 on Sun 20 Nov 2016

Storm Angus is expected to bring some very strong winds to coastal counties of southeast England for a time on Sunday morning, when gusts of 70-80 mph are possible. Be prepared for disruption to travel services, interruptions to power supplies and some damage to buildings.

"Angus" will move northeast across southern and southeast England during Sunday morning. Southerly then southwesterly gales are likely with storm force winds developing over the English Channel and affecting some coastal districts. Very squally showers are also expected such that isolated gusts of 70-75 mph are also possible further inland in the Amber warning area.

Covers

West Sussex, Kent, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, Isle of Wight

Rail disruption already expected with no trains on most Southeastern routes until 10am Sunday

Very impressive 12 hour rainfall total from AROME 06Z.

Also shows the danger of very strong wind gusts penetrating well inland.

Great water vapour imagery.

.. as I have just said in the regional thread, I've been finishing off jet washing the garden in the heavy showers that have been occurring here, lots of fun I tell thee!

Just from the showers alone, there's been 7.2mm - large 24 hour totals coming up..

Anyone got any decent streaming webcam links for the south east? Would be interested in watching the storm later from the comfort of the sofa :-)

Have done a blog going into more detail about approaching Storm Angus and also another troublesome low deepening tomorrow to the SW before swinging across England and Wales on Monday, here:

Already 10mm here from pre-frontal showers. I think some areas could see a months rain in the next 3 - 5 days. :O

I'm safe from the worst of it here thankfully, and I'm also safely home for the night so bring it on, Angus.

13.6mm here, now. The wind has started getting up too, 28mph top gust and 15mph windspeed. I'm sure the Purbeck hills will do their best to try and slow the biggest gusts down. phil_34.gif

Moderate/Heavy rain here for last couple of hours. Barometer falling, now 988mb. Temperature 8.2C, humidity 95%

Wind yet to strengthen but isobars to S/SW tightening.

With this storm and Monday's following on it's heels expecting high rainfall totals and some overflowing rivers in these parts!

Very calm here ,and gone milder but radar looks threatening .

Would not be surprised if inland east of Dorset sees a 75mph gust and coastal areas close on 85 or more .

Only good news with Angus currently timing ,hopefully worst gone before people are out tomorrow in mass ,take care ,.

Why the twitter thing? You know it sods up threads with this scrolling problem

It doesn't mess up anything if you use a modern and up to date browser. :)
