43 years ago this weekend, we were camping near Lulworth in Dorset.

We missed a full-blown gale the previous week which caused havoc on the campsites.

Sunday 30th July - we attended the Bovington Army Display in the morning. It stayed dry until the end of the display after which the heavens opened leading to the cancellation of the village open afternoon due to flooding.

Monday 31st July - incessant heavy rain all day and into the evening leading to a cumulative total of some 100mm of rain at nearby Winfrith Heath.

Tuesday 1st August - a real contrast, with the sun shining all day. I was never quite sure how this came about but it was welcome as we tried to dry out.

Wednesday 2nd August - we returned home amidst torrential downpours leading to dangerous driving conditions and another 40mm of rain at Bournemouth.

Unsurprisingly, the bad weather was caused by a low pressure moving up from the south and getting stuck over Dorset. A memorable few days but for all the wrong reasons!
