‘Precipitation nowcasting’ is attempt to predict weather more accurately in short term

DeepMind’s tool was evaluated alongside two existing rain prediction tools by more than 50 Met Office meteorologists, who ranked it first for accuracy and usefulness in 88% of cases. The results are published in Nature.

A deep generative model using radar observations is used to create skilful precipitation predictions that are accurate and support real-world utility.

Thanks for that, I think!

I wonder if similar results could be obtained for somewhat longer time scales, say 3-12 hours. I doubt the longer ones as individual cloud cells develop and decay within this. Someone more switched on that my old brain might be able to make constructive comment?
