How does mean temperature get calculated for days?

Recommended Posts

I am not sure how mean temperature is worked out for days?

The mean temperature of any month is calculated by adding together the mean temperatures of every day of the month and then dividing that by the number of days in that month.  Is a similar thing done for daily mean temperatures?  Is a reading taken at a weather station every hour, and then the hourly readings are added together at the end of the day and divided by 24, or is it just a case of adding together the minimum and maximum temperatures of any day and then dividing by 2?

To get the daily mean temperature you just add the maximum and minimum together and divide by 2.

This is then added together and divided by the days in the month to get the monthly mean.

Thanks for the reply.  This amateur weather station in Hampstead, has an excellent website.  It shows the minimum , maximam and mean temperature for every day since 2009.

The mean temperature seems to be calulated in a different way.  The maximum temperature for yesterday (18th December) was 9.6 and minimum temperature  -1.9.  The mean temperature was 2.6.  That seems to be lower that what it should be if you were adding maximum and minimum and dividing by 2.  That would give a mean temperature of 3.85?

I'm not sure how they got 2.6..

    It should be 2.9

    The math is (-1.9) + 9.6 ÷ 2 = 2.9

I'll come back to this later. Weather station software doesn't add the min and max temp and then divide by two. There's a different formula.
