Wow, that brings back memories. The day after was the Gillette cricket Cup Final, Yorkshire v Surrey at Lords, and my friends and I had tickets. We assumed that the game would be called off due to the heavy rain and flooding, but no, it went ahead, if a bit delayed. We Surrey fans might have wished the game had been called off as Boycott (batting) and Truman (bowling) took Surrey apart and Yorkshire won at a canter.

Looks like September 1965 as a whole was very wet, following a very wet summer. Persistently cool as well. May was near average but not great, and April not especially great either: "cool and showery" so this must surely be a candidate for worst extended summer of the post-war period.

Finally, October was very dry!

9th July 1956 saw 2.38 ins of rain in central London, as noted by J H Brazell, but rather surprisingly Philip Eden makes no mention of this rainfall. Conversely, Eden notes the violent thunderstorms and large rainfall totals sixty five years ago on 5th September 1958 which affected 'parts of Greater London', but Brazell doesn't even have this day down as the wettest day of that month. Maybe something to do with the 'hit-and-miss' nature of thunderstorms, although I recall data which suggested that 41 mm (1.58 ins) of rain fell at Kew that day.  We were abroad in 1958 and I do not recall this event.
