The sharp cold snap of 26th November-2nd December 1973

There was a short potent cold snap during the last week of November 1973 bringing severe frosts and snowfalls to some parts. 

Carlisle recorded a minimum of -12.6°C on the morning of the 30th November.

The cold snap came before the Three-Day week was enforced, it was probably fortunate that the two did not coincided with each other

This spell was the coldest of the winter locally. The figures from the Hull weather station show the max of 1.4C on 28th November and min of -6.7C on 2nd December were not beaten for the rest of the winter.

Indeed, the 28th November - 3rd December 1973 all had mins below -3.0C, something which didn't occur at all again after that until 28th January 1976.

I was still at school and remember it well. I had hoped the rest of the winter was going to cold. Unfortunately it was dismally mild!!

Hoping same time period 50 years on doesn't follow suit.. i.e. the cold spell upon us now.

Yes, I think Jan 1974 was one of those horror show Januaries, wasn't it? Extremely wet, dull and mild - of the Jan 1948 or 2014 variety.
