A very good summer that is rarely spoken about.  Every month was significantly warmer than average. Here's the season and monthly maximum CET values:

Summer: 22.2°C (6th hottest on record)

June: 21.3°C

July: 22.0°C

August: 23.3°C

There were unfortunately drought conditions.  Every day from the 24th July to the 28th August recorded a maximum CET of at least 20°C.

Although it doesn't compare to some of the beasts of the summers in the last 30 years, it still has quite a respectable rank. For mean it's 16.9C which is 13th highest although in the 19th century 1846 and 1826 was warmer, and 1869 also at 16.9C.

No individual months were exceptionally dry, but August was the driest, coming out at 39.9mm in the EWP series which is the 21st driest. Overall the EWP for the season was 132.9mm, which makes it the 17th driest summer since at least 1766. Quite dry regardless, but 1995 was twice as dry!

For the rainfall in the central England region (Midlands + east Anglia) Just about made it into the top 10, but 2018 and 2022 were a little drier.

I thought this would also be relevant @Earthshine

Was discussing hot summers with someone the other night and brought up this graphic. A few counties still has 1899 in the lead, such as Sutherland in north Scotland, 3 in South Wales, and 2 in northern Ireland, interesting If I say so myself!

Metwatch 2018 will be remembered as a classic summer here, I can't remember years things happen too well but I can still feel that summer just thinking about it. It felt like being in the Med especially with the endless dry heat, the crisp brown grass and the wildfires around the country.

Interesting how 2021 makes it there too!

Funky one that indeed, Northern Ireland had its third hottest summer on record, and Scotland its fourth!

Relative to average, Scotland and Northern Ireland have seen the mildest, driest and sunniest conditions during summer 2021.

According to Trevor Harley the highest temperature of the year was 32.4 on the 25th august which today doesn’t seem that amazing but back in 1899 not to bad. There was also a suspect 33.3 on the 15th august at Bramley. 1900 looks even better with a high of 35.1 which I believe was one of the hottest days on record back then ??

Impressively, still the 9th hottest summer for the UK as a whole despite being 125 years ago.

Remarkably, Southampton recorded over 290 of sunshine in each three months. May and September were also sunnier than normal, despite the former being a cool month.

Given @Summer8906's location, he'd rate this one.

Southhampton figures for each three monhts (avg high/low, rain and sun)

23.1C, 11.1C, 34.9mm, 293.2hrs

25.0C, 14.0C, 33.8mm, 291.0hrs

25.7C, 14.0C, 14.6mm, 293.9hrs

The MO report says the first half of June 1899 was "extremely" fine and dry across the entire country and only broke on the 17th. Hottest temperatures were between the 15th-17th with 29C widespread.

The second half was apparently much more unsettled,  but it doesn't appear to have been the typical dull washout conditions given the anomalous sunshine totals and looks to have been very thundery.

July's described by the MO as having frequent thundery breakdowns but generally being well in excess of sunshine everywhere away from Ireland and parts of the north so a bit more of a split than in June. Hottest temperatures on the 20th and 21st with 32C.

Unsettled start but quickly turning fine again. A very thundery looking spell around the 11th-12th.

There's that hot spell, again looking thundery. Then, especially for the south, buckets of sun for the rest of the month.

August is  described as setting records for sunshine, heat and dryness across many stations in the south-east, implying this was the August 1995 of its time. Similarly to June, basically hot and fine for the first three weeks and then an unsettled end, though the unsettled weather is said to have brought little in the way of meaningful rain. Highest temperatures on the 25th with 32C.

LetItSnow Indeed, looks an impressive summer. At a guess, in Southampton the sunniest summer on record. Had a quick check of some others and it seems to be well ahead of almost all, but only a few hours ahead of 1976.

Summer8906 If 2025 or 2026 were to be a repeat but a tad hotter (for the sake of the record books) and thunderier then even I'd be quite pleased. What makes 1899 is that despite its dryness each three months had at least 1 or 2 thundery spells inbetween.

Metwatch I see how 1976 is still in the lead in Hampshire and West Sussex for hottest summer. That figures, as though I can't remember 1976, none of the 21st century summers seem to have achieved, in my experience, quite the legendary weather that 1976 is renowned for.

As stated above 1976 is also apparently the only summer which comes close to 1899 for sunshine in this area.

I wonder if 1976 will ever be beaten for sunshine in my lifetime? I did live through it but was just that little bit too young to remember it (I have a few scattered weather memories of 1977 and more consistent ones from 1978).
