  1. Interesting NAE for Wednesday evening (too good to be true of course!):
  2. The wettest March on record in fact. Following probably the snowiest winter since 1813/4, it really did rub salt in the wounds. This thaw shold be nothing in comparison. Even the Big Freeze in 1963 (you know, the actual Big Freeze ) ended on a benign note.
  3. The first ten days of the month have beaten January 1941 by some distance, even with the inevitable revised figures come February. Very impressive indeed. Mid-December to mid-January shouldn't beat 1981-2, but it should run it close: 16th December 1981 - 15th January 1982 = -0.3C 16th December 2009 - 10th January 2010 = -0.1C Again, very impressive.
  4. About 1C all day here with sleet and wet snow (which didn't stick of course). Just a little lower...
  5. Nor have we all seen -16.5C! I guess I never will round here though.
  6. The similarities between 1st February 1947 and now are uncanny. Looking back at that year, a run of sub-zero CET days began on 24th January and ended on 2nd February (CET -2.08C). Then 5th-26th February averaged -2.46C. None of this of course means the next February 1947 is just commencing, and the 3rd and 4th of February weren't much above zero (both 0.7C), but it's interesting nevertheless.
  7. January 1982 being another example. Check out the charts near the end of the severe cold spell.
  8. Snowing lightly in L17. I'm off to West Derby very shortly.
  9. Amazing how an easterly can raise temperatures so much! I bet it doesn't drop as quickly after dark...
  10. Already -5.1C in Crosby at 7pm. Should it stay clear and calm tonight?
  11. If that forecast by Dan Corbett even half comes off, I'll be extremely happy indeed. Anyway, we need more snow now as everything on the pavements has been compressed into thick ice. Only green areas and very quiet back streets are now walkable. The local supermarket has also run out of bread!
  12. Brrr!!! I could certainly feel the cold when I stepped outside at 7:30am this morning. Penetrating. The -11C logged at Crosby is quite exceptional given its location.
  13. Above zero in the Wirral? I just went outside in Wallasey with my gloves on and I thought my fingers were going to fall off.
  14. Just to clear any confusion - Shawbury recorded -25.2C on the morning of 13th December 1981, which was a new English record at the time. This was then broken the following month with the -26.1C in Newport.
  15. No, the lowest UK temperature for January 7th is -22.6C in 1982 (Braemar). That looks safe tonight. -26.1C at Newport, Shropshire (January 10th, 1982).
  16. Interesting - I just tried to open my window to get a feel of the temperature outside and it's frozen stuck! That's certainly the question on my lips at the moment. One thing's for sure, it will make far better progress through the Pennines than those recent easterly snow showers have (if indeed it is heading this way).
  17. I knew I was being conservative when I guessed 2.0C. I thought going lower would look like ramping - not anymore! Nailed on for the first sub-zero half of a month since the first half of February 1991 (which averaged -1.5C).
  18. Some insanely low temperatures tonight. -15C at Woodford?! And how's it only -2C at Liverpool AP? I'm in South Liverpool right now and it's absolutely freezing. Still no buses running, and my housemate's friend can't fly back to France because EasyJet haven't cleared their planes of ice. Never known chaos like it. Can I get to work over in the Wirral tomorrow?
  19. An interesting afternoon to say the least. I left for my lunch break at 1:30pm and had a wander around New Brighton - winter wonderland stuff, I really regret not having had my camera at hand. There were near whiteout conditions along the Mersey due to stronger winds. About 4-5 inches lying in most places. I then returned to the news that I was being sent home before 3pm (I should have worked late till eight - result!). Went down to Liscard to catch the bus back over to Liverpool before realising that they had all been taken off the road. Major bummer. So I took a gamble and walked 15 minutes to Wallasey Village station - lo and behold a train arrives that very minute! Walked home from the city centre and took about half an hour to get home - a lot of fun trudging through at least 6 inches of snow, though I also went flying on ice for the first time this winter! Got back home about fiveish, which is pretty good going considering - it's pure chaos out there this evening. My feet were wet and cold, my hands are still red raw, but I feel fantastic.
  20. I don't really want us on the news to be honest, as it would make us look like amateurs.
  21. You'll be extremely unlucky not to get hit by this thing. Even given the very slow movement of the band, it must surely hit you very soon? It's still grinding its way south isn't it? Proper big flakes now. This is getting better and better. *does a funky dance*
  22. The snow just got heavier and the flakes just got bigger. There must be at least an inch extra on the ground now as footprints start to disappear quite rapidly. This is incredibly awesome.
  23. Snowing heavily in Wallasey now. There's some graupel coming down too.
  24. Morning all! Awoke this morning to an increased cover (3-5cm). I'm in Wallasey right now and there's less cover here, but it's snowing again - light grains rather than large flakes, but snow nonetheless - and that can only be a good thing given how much I'm expecting it to turn to rain. The afternoon will undoubtedly be key. Finally, guess what the council didn't do last night? The roads were absolute chaos getting into town.
