  1. Provisional CET for Christmas Day is 2.8C - that's still dragging the overall CET down (currently at 3.5C). Boxing Day may show up as over 3.5C, but it shouldn't really make a dent on the overall average. From then onwards it should be sub-3C days again until January, shouldn't it? In short, the current CET is about the same as 2008 - and can't really get much higher.
  2. Yep, lots of wonderful sunsets here too. Remember a particularly lovely one on the 29th (leap day!). It was quite an unusual month really, similar in synoptics to February 1891 I guess? Despite the continued lack of snow, it at least helped to make up for another awful January.
  3. Remember it well. This was the only occasion I missed school because of the weather - my mum simply refused to take me because of how deep the snow was. As it turned out the next day, school WAS open and only about half the class turned up. My teacher was pretty annoyed and was talking of making all those who didn't turn up stay in at lunchtime to catch up - I simply told him I was sick the previous day, and he bought it and let me off! You see, I was generally a well-behaved kid at school and so thought myself entitled to a lie quota in case of such an emergency. Besides, it was definitely harsh to moan about kids not turning up that day. The snow was so deep I could hardly move in it! Plus, my mother was always serious about me being punctual at school - she knew what she was talking about.
  4. All in Liverpool except * which indicates Sheffield: Autumn 2000 - neverending rain. Day after day after day. December 2000 - huge snowfall on the 28th. Stuck around until New Year. July 2001 - hot first week with some big thunderstorms. April 2003 - 25C in the middle of April. Felt like a classic summer's day, sat in a quiet beer garden. Summer 2003 - consistently warm with many bouts of hot weather, although the record-breaking spell in early August rather disappointed here. Nevertheless, the morning of the 10th saw a spectacular thunderstorm, bettered only in my book by the one in early September 1995. February 2004* - big snowfall out of nowhere. Massive snowball fight ensued. August 2004 - very warm and humid, with lots of thundery downpours. November 2004* - cold front passed through on the 18th, turning a mild autumnal day into a wintry night with six inches of snow. December 2004 - White Christmas! The odd light flurry earlier in the day, but the main event arrived in the evening - barely an inch fell, but everything was nevertheless white and festive. Stuck around through Boxing Day and into the 27th. Late February 2005* - snow. Lots and lots of it, at least a foot's worth after days of heavy showers. Stuck around well into March, some patches on the higher ground lasting for over a month. I remember finally seeing rain falling out of the sky and thinking how unusual that was - more of this please! Late October 2005* - unusually warm and sunny. Felt like summer. March 2006 - surprisingly snowy! After a winter which threatened snowfalls but failed miserably, March came up with the goods. Liverpool had some good falls early in the month but the big event came on the 12th, when an east-west battleground event dumped six inches overnight. Went back to Sheffield that day, where snow flurries continued into the third week. April 2006* - very late snowfall on the 9th, which started off as hail. A very snowy Woodhead Pass on the way back to Liverpool the next day. Summer 2006 - June was good, but July was exceptional - consistently hot and sunny, save for a short blip in the second week. Best summer weather since 1995. Shame about August. Autumn 2006 - summery September and another very warm October. Winter 2006/7 - ridiculously mild. January didn't go below 6C in the first week and didn't go below 5C until the 21st! The only good events were a pre-Christmas fog episode and a decent February snowfall. April 2007 - exceptional - warm, sunny and dry pretty much all month. Summer 2007 - cold and wet. July was especially bad, with torrential downpours virtually every day despite a lack of actual heat. January 2008 - ridiculously mild again. Managed one frost during the entire month (on the 3rd). February 2008 - warm by day but cold by night with a surprising amount of frost. Very sunny. April 2008 - no snow all winter, then it snows on the night of the 5th/6th leaving an inch or so. First time I can remember seeing lying April snow in Liverpool. May 2008 - very warm and summery first two weeks. Big thunderstorm on the 11th (my birthday!), which left flash flooding everywhere. October 2008 - winter in October! Some sleety precipitation on the 28th, but no sticking snow (as there was in some parts of the country). However, the Clwydian Range in North Wales appeared completely white for the last few days of the month. November 2008 - very brief lying snow in the early hours of the 22nd. Can't remember the last time I saw lying November snow in Liverpool (might have happened in 1993, but again I don't remember). Late December 2008 - Early January 2009 - very cold and dry. New Year's Eve was frigid, with some fog and even some very light snow - excellent. Early February 2009 - big snowfall on the 2nd, with quite a bit in the morning but the main batch arriving in the evening, leaving several inches. Another light covering on the morning of the 5th. Autumn 2009 - notably dry first half, very wet second half with non-stop rain - the worst since Autumn 2000. Late December 2009 - pre-Christmas snow! And if not snow, then tons of ice and unusual amounts of graupel. Also an awesome thundersnow event on the 22nd... ...and it's not over just yet!
  5. An icy, icy Christmas Day. Had a right old 'mare trying to get to the pub this afternoon. I'm visiting family in West Derby at the minute - all the actual snow on the pavements has gone, but it's still surviving on the grass and some rooftops. Croxteth Park still looks extremely festive. On the way up here yesterday, Wavertree looked very white. I wonder if it kept most of its snow cover today?
  6. Classic! Here: best hailstorm - nope heaviest snow - not a chance biggest flakes - well, possibly The most unusual occurrences for me were a ) the thundersnowstorm (snow thunderstorm?) and b ) the amount of graupel falling and lying.
  7. It's gone really misty here now. Quite a bit of snow cover still intact. Foggy Christmas Eve?
  8. Yes, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all!
  9. Woke up to a slight reduction in the snow cover this morning, but most of it has persisted. It still feels cold out there, so hopefully it can stick around for the Big Day. Fingers crossed!
  10. Exactly the same as 2008 at this point - now for the first time, 2009 will be cooler. 2008 rose to 4.2C at Boxing Day, before dropping to 3.5C at New Year's Eve to finish the month - surely 2009 will now beat this?
  11. HUGE flakes coming down now. Absolutely huge. Don't remember seeing any like them before.
  12. Hooray! Come and join the party. It's proper postcard stuff out there now. I've just been listening to "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby whilst watching the snow come down - pure bliss.
  13. Backtrack, I feel really sorry for you if what you're saying is true. It's coming down quite heavily here now, with proper large flakes. Get yourself over here now (Sefton Park)!
  14. Snowing properly here now. The cars are starting to get a fresh coating. Very happy days if this continues!
  15. It's coming down here now as... wet snow!
  16. Freezing rain maybe? The ground must be frozen where you are (it certainly is here). Still nothing coming out of the sky here. I'm attentively on lamppost watch at the minute.
  17. Precipitation in Runcorn? Nothing in South Liverpool yet, although the cloud is building up. Will be gutted not to get some snow from this. Took a stroll round Sefton Park earlier - the boating lake is frozen solid, save for a small area where there is a strong current due to water entering the lake (all the ducks have congregated here too). More surprising still is that the ice is thick enough to walk on - there was a man playing fetch with his dog in the middle of the lake! I wasn't brave enough to try this myself though.
  18. No thaw here today. If only there was more on the ground!
  19. It's going to be a close call, that's for sure. The -18.4C at Aviemore earlier this year is definitely under threat. For me the main thing stopping Tulloch Bridge going much lower is how the big drop in temperature usually comes when the sun goes down - that drop has already taken place by the looks of things. How much lower can it get from this point onwards? Any historical comparisons? EDIT - uh-oh, -14.7C at 7pm...
  20. From weatheronline: Issued: 16:47hrs Tuesday 22th December 2009 Simon: Another icy night ahead for much of the country. But more serious problems across southwest Scotland where quite a confined area of heavy snow is causing problems and will do so through this evening. More sleet and snow moving through southwest England and Wales tomorrow evening, and then the Midlands and northern England overnight into Christmas Eve. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-app/reports?LANG=en&MENU=WeatherOnlineScratchBox Looks like a much larger, more sustained area of snow if it comes off. Much less hit-and-miss than recent days for sure.
  21. Nothing special round here. So far it's the biggest snow event since... February 2009! I hate marginal synoptics.
