  1. Knowing our luck Captain you are probably right. Today has been a strange one. A beautiful sunny morning here in mid Essex after a cloudy start, with a hot sultry feel. From early afternoon onwards it has been mostly cloudy with only the occasional sunny spell. We had one very light short shower, that was not enough to wet the ground and it was quite breezy and felt rather cool out of shelter. The wind appears to have died down now, but there is total cloud cover. I do not hold out much hope for storms tonight. Kind Regards Dave
  2. It has been a beautiful day here in mid Essex, although a tad breezy at times What are the chances for any thunderstorms please for my neck of the woods tonight and tomorrow? Kind Regards Dave
  3. Hope everything goes well with the performance this evening Reefseeker. Jax sorry to hear of your sad loss. I know what it is like to lose a pet, which is definitely one of the family. I returned yesterday evening with the wife from a five day coach holiday up to Loch Lomond. It involved an awful lot of travelling up to the Highlands one day and to North Berwick on another for example. I doubt there was one day when we did not do at least 200 miles. We all felt absolutely exhausted, although everyone enjoyed it. The weather each day appears to have been the total opposite to what it was back home. On sunny days the Southeast had rain and on wet days you were having good weather, This afternoon has been very windy here in Chelmsford and a heavy shower has just passed through. Our eldest son has recently moved out and purchased a house in another part of Chelmsford. Last autumn on of a line of poplar trees to the rear of the row of properties fell during a windy spell and damaged the roof and guttering to his neighbours house and the one next door to him. There is uncertainty as to who owns these trees. I managed to lop the higher branches on some of the trees near to his garden using an extendable lopper from a ladder, but some of the other trees which are much taller are too big for us to do anything with. They look a bit unstable in full leaf in this wind and he has been attempting to find out who is responsible for them. Site plans are unclear, the developer who built the houses is unsure and my son's solicitor, believes it could be the developer but is not sure. He just hopes that the trees do not crash on his or any of the neighbouring properties whilst further investigation continues, It is all rather worrying for him. Kind Regards Dave PS apologies but I do not know why this posting has come out in emboldened text!
  4. I will be going away to Scotland for a few days holiday starting tomorrow, but on my return I will take up your suggestion and give it a try. I found the Scottish thread useful on Saturday when I asked what the weather was likely to be in Loch Lomond Region next week and was advised what to expect. would that have been covered in the weather chat thread? kind regards Dave
  5. I occasionally post on the SE/EA thread as I feel comfortable there, as it is a very friendly place to be. it is not just about posting of course one can enjoy reading the comments of others. Certainly I will miss the postings of JP, Charlton Kerry, Steve C, Tamara and numerous others. Like others have said or at least intimated the Model Thread can at times be a very intimidating place to be, especially when toys start being thrown out of prams, when the weather does not go as some posters would like it to. I for one do not feel expert enough to post on that thread, but have no such reservations to do so on our regional thread as they are all such a smashing friendly bunch. Is there any chance of reconsidering this decision. Kind Regards Dave
  6. Hello There, I normally post on the SE/EA regional thread, but would appreciate your advice. On Monday my wife and I travelling up to near Loch Lomond for a five day coach holiday. What is the weather likely to be up until close of play Friday. The wife is not sure what she needs to pack. wll it be thick coats and rainwear or shorts and flip flops or both? Looking at the BBC 5 day forecast was not very helpful. Many thanks Kind Regards Dave
  7. Good Morning everyone, A cloudy morning here in Springfield, but hopefully the sun will break through later. Yesterday was a funny sort of day. When the sun was out and where shelter was afforded from the strong breeze it felt quite pleasant, but when out in it I felt chilly. Off topic, when it comes to computers I am not the brightest spark! Is it something that I have done or has the Netweather format changed over the past few days? The reason I enquire is that I can no longer see the "Like" option at the foot of the posting. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks Kind Regards Dave
  8. Good Evening everyone, The weather seems somewhat colder this evening. On my ten minute walk home from the bus stop I felt chilly. The clouds were scooting under the moon at quite a pace. Off topic it is not just Charlton K and myself that get into trouble with their other halves. My son is in the dog house after what happened yesterday. His partner went to a car boot sale yesterday morning and he decided to do a bit of tidying up whilst she was out. They had company the night before and sat outside using a heater they had recently acquired. Yesterday morning he emptied the ashes from the heater into one of his dustbins and went indoors to get on with some of the housework to gain a few brownie points. A few minutes later he heard a fairly large bang followed by an urgent knock on the window by a neighbour to tell him that two of his bins were alight as well as two fencing panels. His three year old was highly excited as his hero is Elvis and so he kept saying call Sam. The fire brigade were called by a neighbour and Harvey enjoyed the visit. but my son has learnt an important lesson the hard way and will not be repeating it in a hurry. See link below http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Huntingdon-St-Ives-St-Neots/Fence-blaze-next-to-site-of-Huntingdon-forensic-laboratory-20140309162441.htm Kind regards Dave
  9. CK you have so much in common with me I sometimes think that I am two people on seperate plains! I am a little hard of hearing, and it seems to be getting worse lately. Sometimes I try to "tune off" and nod or say yes or no or "oh dear" hopefully in the right places, but sometimes I become unstuck by making the wrong response to "her indoors" and that is when she goes off on one. Another word of advice NEVER try to be humorous at your beloved's expence. I tried it once and only once! We were attending a friends 60th birthday party and we were introduced to a lady a bit older than us who we had never met before. The conversation went on to what we had done with our lives and she told us when she was young she was very much into dancing and had been one of the famous Tiller Girls. I chirped up trying to be funny "My wife was a Tiller" and she said "was she?", to which I repled "Yes- Atilla The Hun". Well it went down like a lead balloon and I got the cold shoulder treatment for the rest of the evening and the hairdryer treatment on the way back home in the car" As the saying goes "Remember folks dont try this at home!" On topic the weather is now showing signs of improvement in NW1 with the sun attempting to break through. As it was very warm yesterday lunchtime and in the train on my way home to Chelmo yesterday evening I decided to dispence with my overcoat for today and I really regretted it as it was cold walking to the station this morning and across the Olympic Park to a meeting at the Stadium Site Offices. On the way back to Pudding Mill Lane DLR station there was drizzle in the air and quite a pronounced breeze on the elevated section of the Greenway. Hopefully it will feel warming on the journey home this evening. Kind Regards Dave
  10. You sure that it wasn't gunfire! The other day I noted that you are interested in the first world war and are considering writing a book on the subject. I know someone through my role as safety officer at Chelmsford City (He wrote a book about the history of our club in the 1960's when he lived in the area- he now lives in Leatherhead) who has written a fictional book on the first world war- covering a young footballer tyring to make it before the war with Preston but got thrown into the conflict on the front line. It is well worth a read. It is by Steve Little and is entitled More than Just a Life. and is published by Authorhouse. It is a very good read. If you want me to contact him for advice on publishing please let me know. Back on topic- just had a heavy shower in NW1, a little brighter now but looks rather stormy. Kind regards Dave
  11. Hello Charltonkerry, Thanks for your reply. You are perfectly safe as her indoors is totally computer illiterate. she can just about turn it on, but that is as far as it goes! she has no desire to use the PC. She even gets annoyed when I start to read out posts from this site as she thinks I spend too much time reading about the weather especially when I start to read postings out aloud to her! She once went into the Halifax to set up a new account and decided on an internet one- God knows why. The assistant there got her to log in- an ordeal in itself and she then had to go through various security passwords, but forgot to write them down. The lady then asked to log in again to show her how to interrogate her account, but of course she could not. They had to start the whole process over again and that did not go without mishap. By this time the queue was almost out into the precinct. In the end the lady tactfully suggested that perhaps an internet account was not for her. Weather related- light shower on the way back home this evening, but a bit on the chilly side. Kind Regards Dave
  12. Where is Charlton K today? I have a bone to pick with him. My wife is very upset. She moved to Harlow when she was about three years old as one of the first residents when it built as an overspill town for north London. She did not like him to refer to her home town as "Orrible Harlow". He should be warned that she seems to be very much in the same vein as his nearest and dearest and so he needs to be very careful. To prove how "hard" she is, I must relate a story that happened about 15 years ago in Majorca. It was one of those holidays where it anything could go wrong it did. The flight out was delayed, our youngest who was overtired vomitted all over me in the coach on the way to our hotel and when we finally did get there, the accommodation was truly awful.Apart from the foregoing on the second day of our stay my middle son accidently poked me in the eye with a snooker cue! As I do not do much sunbathing although my wife does I decided to go down to the local shops just before lunch to purchase some cakes. When I returned poolside I noticed a ball coming towards me and in attempting to kick it back into the pool I lost my balance and landed heavily on my back and elbow, squashing the cakes into a messy heap in the process. Whilst "the boss" was having a go at me for ruining the cakes another lady came over to tell her off as my elbow was bleeding quite a bit and required attention. Following cleaning it up we made the most of the rest of the day, but the following morning I could hardly move my arm. It so happened that that day a doctor visited the complex as part of his usual schedule and when I showed him my arm he drove me to his surgery a short distance away to have the injury xrayed. He confirmed that it was not broken, but he nevertheless insisted that it should be placed in a sling for the remainder of the holiday. Now to the main part of my tale of woe! A few days later my beloved was sitting on her sun lounger and as I wished to discuss something with her I made my way down to sit beside her on the lounger. Just as my buttocks touched the lounger she decided to stand up. She could not have timed it better. As she did so the lounger tipped sideways as my weight had overbalanced it and in slow motion I fell sideways in an arc until I landed on my sing wearing elbow. It was absolute agony but all sh could do was laugh as well as everyone else sunbathing nearby. I did not think it particularly funny at the time, but I do now. I spent the rest of the holiday fairly inactive apart from performing my Florence Nightingale act with my spare arm. The trees by the pool seemed to attract wasp like insects (they were not wasps) and lots of people were being stung by them. My wife likes to take everything, apart from the kitchen sink with her when we go away and this holiday was no exception. Included in her medicine chest was a cube of Waspeasie (or however it is spelt) I I spent quite a bit of time applying the medication to tose who had been stung. It was certainly an unforgettable holiday and one I will never forget. Kind Regards Dave
  13. I noticed there was ground frost in sheltered parts of fields as I waslked down to my local railway station this morning, but it was a bit too early to see the sun. By the time I arrived ar Stratford it was sunny and it is a truly wonderful day but clouds are now starting to build up following the earlier unbroken sunshine. Having returned to my office in Euston, following my site visits on the Olympic Park I must say it is one of those days where I do not mind too much being in the office,as I am based on the 27th floor and I have a great panoramic view of London. From my window I can see the Olympic Park (the Orbit) in the distance, but if I go to other wings of the building I can see the Houses of Parliament and the Wheel, Westminster Cathedral, Wembley Stadium, Battersea Power Station and Hampstead Heath. I am really looking forward to the weekend as I intend to watch my local football team in the afternoon after what seems like an eternity since they last were at home. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend. Kind Regards Dave
  14. Yes we see this everytime with Government cutbacks of whatever political persuation. They feel important boasting that they have achieved this and that savings, but when the "s5it hits the fan" others are always to blame. As you say savings often result in greater expenditure as I have quoted in the past with the Magistrates Courts reorganisation and the so called bedroom tax being good examples. When will politicians ever learn that sometimes expenditure is allocated for a purpose and a reason and to cut funds does frequently not achieve the desired effect?. I guess it sounds macho when delivering those kinds of statements during an election campaign and the electorate is gullible enough to believe them. Kind Regards Dave
  15. Good Morning everyone, I have not posted on this particular thread before as I am nowhere near as knowledgeable as others that offer their opinion on this site and if I did I would be fearful of embarrassing myself through my ignorance! Reading through today's postings it is certainly an intriguing situation we are seeing being played out, with much more excitement to come over the coming week or so. Having viewed the charts from my very amateur viewpoint I feel that the GFS is under estimating the cold block's resistance to the northeast. I can remember back in 1963 when listening as an excitable youngster to the weather forecast on the radio there was in the outlook period of two days hence a prediction of rain spreading from the southwest accompanied by milder conditions. This of course did not materialise and we experienced a winter of extreme cold. I feel much more confident after reading an article in today's Daily Fail entitled "Flooding alert as downpours return" on page 14. In the penultimate paragraph it states and I quote "However, temperatures have been relatively mild- as high as 10C (50F)- with no sign of a repeat of last year's heavy January snowfall". That has really clinched it for me- a snowfest is almost certainly on the way. I intend to retire at the end of April and this will enable me to read all the helpful guidance that is included elsewhere on the Netweather site and hopefully I will be able to understand the dynamics of the weather a bit better. Many thanks to all those that post their detailed observations and opinions which are very much appreciated by me and I am sure many others. Kind Regards Dave
  16. Hello A S How much was the haicut- £140 or £15? The price is very much in the news these days. It is fascinating to her every newsstation, and peiple generally now using the term Polar Vortex as if it is secomd nature to them and fully understand the meaning of the term. I have decided on a haircut this evening. Being a bit "lacking" on top and with the sides and back being trimmed the weather is certain to get colder now. Almost guaranteed! Kind Regards Dave
  17. Good Afternoon everyone, Lovely afternoon up in NW1. Great view to all of London from the 27th floor. Looking forward to the weekend, hoping my local team's match is on, dependant of course as to how much rain falls overnight and tomorrow morning. I had to leave the MAD thread as I was finding it all too depressing. Happy belated birthday JP. I really look forward to reading your comments on this thread. I hope you do not mind but I extract below a portion of one of the messages that you posted late yesterday as follows:- "still happy tonight with the runs this is typical chaos mode with them at present" I hope you feel a little better now. Probably all that celebtatory drinking! Kind Regards Dave
  18. What a cheek- we were voted the 10th best place in the country to live and so it cannot be that bad! Yes we did not have a lot of rain with the last lot that went through. Dave
  19. Good Afternoon everyone from a sunny and bright NW1. A fabulous view from the 27th floor today across London. Just saw the following on the BBC News website following this morning's COBRA Mtg as per link below. It makes for concerning reading especially for COAST and his friends on the South Coast. Stay safe. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25572390 Happy New Year everyone Kind Regards Dave
  20. Good afternoon everyone, I just wanted to pop into this thread to say how much I enjoy reading everyone's comments on it, being a very friendly place to be. Here is wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. Regards Dave
  21. Hello Wet & Dry, You may be interested to read below what I posted in the severe weather thread:- I am involved in the construction works currently ongoing on the Olympic Park as the CDM Coodinator (involved principally in health and safety issues during the construction process) principally in respect of the transformation of the Olympic Stadium. The works ceased Friday and do not resume until Monday 6 January. We have cranes currently on site for the removal of the roofing components, prior to the installation of a considerably larger roof. At Wednesday's team meering I stated that it was essential that all cranes should have their jibs lowered and all plant, heras fecing etc secured to prevent it all blowing around. I am reassured they took note of my warning and did what I asked of them before they vacated the site for their break. Looking out from my office this morning accross the London skyline this morning from the 27th floor of the office block where I am based I can see several fully rigged cranes standing proud to the skyline. I only hope that their confidence in not taking the precautions that we have are justified as in most if not all cases there will not be anyone around to do anything to put things right as it is a nationwide cosure of the construction industry until 6th January. PS weather related wind really picking up here and I can hear it buffeting against the building. I will not leave it too late to travel home this evening as Greater Anglia have already postponed 29 trains this evening. Tomorrow is a half day for me and as Greater Anglia have already stated that there will be no trains until at least 10 O'clock I will be working from our Chelmsford Office. Everyone stay safe Kind Regards Dave
