Convective / Storm Chat And Discussion
PMPhotography replied to Coast's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Iv'e been out walking with the camera since 13.00! I took the MO's forecast of thunder showers from 13.00 till 19.00 and thought i could get some great shots! There's some great convection around with some impressive cummulonimbus towers. We've had a few hail showers and a couple of heavy downpours but no thunderstorms. The sky has gone black though as i type and radar is looking a little more promising with some heavy showers moving down from around the North York Moors and Whitby area. Think I'll be watching from the window though! Iv'e walked 8 miles and my feet are killing!! -

Looking good here in Scarborough for some storms this PM. It really is quite cool and breezy this morning though, not the kind of set up you would expect storms in! Anyway, MO sticking with their thunder showers symbol which has been there for the last 2 days! (Most unusual!). A stupid question! What's the difference between a thunderstorm and a thunder shower? The MO's forecast symbol has shown both for us and i'm unsure of the difference. Just recorded a gust of 34mph. If there's gusts within the storms i might record some impressive wind speeds. -
Here you go. I got the earlier model of this 18 months ago and it's still going strong. Great for beginners like me. Does everything you need and smartly produces wind chill, dew points and the like. The computer programme is great and easy to use and plots graphs and averages for you ready to upload to forums, blogs or web sites. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Well I'm recording todays max temp at the moment after it plummeted after sunset. Currently +1.8C. Had dropped to -0.8C but the encroaching cloud and strengthening wind seems to have notched it up. I thought we had done well with not much thaw but if it carries on this way they'll not be much by the morning! Still a great day had!

Only got to the flask on the Whitby road this morning and turned back, funnily enough the snow was heavier when we got back down into Scarborough. We (and the rest of Scarborough) are having a real tough time on the roads due to the thaw from Friday nights snow freezing and then this lot on top. We had 8cm's at the last check and it's still coming down. There was a spell at about 11.30 where the flakes were probably among the biggest Iv'e ever seen! I'll post an official depth when it stops. Temp +0.9C with Dew Point of -0.7C which is probably why the flakes were so huge.

Hmmm, I thought 9.2C was excessive, especially as we still have laying snow! I'm sure even shaded areas would have melted at 9.2C? The trouble I have is that I have a sheltered garden, so if i put the weather station there it's sheltered from the sun but the wind speed is innaccurate. Iv'e put it on the garage roof now and wind speed is accurate but theres no shelter from the sun so temperature is innaccurate! What to do?! Temp plummeting since sunset, now 0.4C.

I'm a little slow with this, had a manic day! We had a semi decent amount of snowfall here on the coast last night with around 2-3cm's in Scarborough, the sun really got to work on it though and it thawed pretty quickly. Still got some laying snow in the shaded spots and the view over to the wolds is white over. Driving over to Whitby in the morning which should be an eventful trip, going along the NYM coastal road! Hopefully we will have a good amount of snow again by tomorrow (As long as we get back for Whitby!) I'll definately have the camera with me, just incase Temp now dropped to 1.6C with a dew point of -3.6C. Had a max temp of 9.2C today, Is there anyone in the area that can confirm this? I don't know if i need to move my station again because I think the sun might be catching it now as the days grow longer!

Grey, cold and damp, A few light snow flurries this morning before light sleet. No PPN for the last couple of hours and the temp has risen slightly to 1.7C, Hardly the 4C forecast so I'm still hopefull. I think we would be unlucky not to see any of the white stuff! Especially if the temp drops again as forecast. Dew point very marginal now though at exactly 0.0C
