Could happen yet! I'm amazed at the innaccuracy of the BBC's temp forecast. It's supposed to be 4C here at 09.00 yet it's 0.6C! How can they attempt to forecast rain, sleet, snow when they can't get the current temps right? It's obviously forecaster biased though as the Metoffice have us down for 1C and they supply the data to BBC. If MO's forecast pulls off we have light snow forecast all day then heavy snow showers tonight which is somewhat of an upgrade! Dew point currently -1.7C. Should be interesting watching today! Iv'e one last snowy scene I want to photograph before this winters done so fingers crossed!

I thought the same Re 10123's post, I remember last time (a couple of weeks ago) when we had the frontal snow from the SW, everyone was saying the coast will miss out but it snowed then, fair enough there wasn't much in the end but it was all snow! Like Lewis mentioned, there is no air modification from the north sea so we have as much chance as those inland, The only main problem for us coasties is elevation which admittedly may play a small part. Should be an interesting week!

WOW!! Where did that come from! Stuck at work so not seen any forecasts all day. Had a few light snow showers through the day and then a REALLY heavy one just now lasting about half an hour with really good chunky flakes, Iv'e nipped out to the car park and theres at least an Inch on the ground. Radar shows a couple more showers heading in later.

No stats as I'm stuck at work, Just had a heavy shower though which was mainly of sleet and hail but snow in the heavier bursts. Looks like the PPN turning more wintry and maybe snow tonight and theres some nice juicy showers in the N sea heading our way. Might just have a dusting by morning. I reckon the moors should be getting some nice accumulations by now.

Still trying to get the hang of this! 850hpa's = -8C Dam = 125 0C Isotherm <400m Dewpoint now -1.9C Seems we have the ingredients but it's not forecast. Are there many other factors? The actual temp is 3.4C so any snow wouldn't be around long anyway so not too bothered, It's purely for my curiosity!
-
Hmmmm, rather dissapointing! After a few light flurries this afternoon the temp has jumped up from 2.2C to 3.7C in the space of an hour. Hope it doesn't rise anymore as there seems to be a few showers heading this way overnight. Wind has picked up now too which may account for it? I must say the week ahead is a little dissapointing after the exciting prospects, Still some light showers about but these will likely be marginal on the coast with the flow being so slack. Hopefully next week will pull off something spectacular as that high moves NW. Fingers crossed. Still, better than the mild atlantic forecast this time last week!

Me too! It's been a craker ey! I'm always wary about margins here after being dissapointed many times, especially in an easterly setup with air modification from the North Sea, from what I can tell though the cold really sets in from Wednesday and the markers are good for all of us to see some snow from then onwards. It looks like the cold is here to stay too, if anything getting colder into next week.

From what I can gather at the moment any PPN from now could be wintry. The snow risk for the next couple of days could be marginal on the coast but any showers that make it inland should be snow. There are some reports of hail and sleet from Newcastle just recently and the temp is dropping away here now too. currently 2.7C with a dropping dew point of +0.4C. I think the risk really increases from Wednesday though. Lewis, If you're about would you have time to explain 0C Isotherms? I noticed you mentioned them in last reply, Iv'e found the charts and from what I can guess 0C Isotherm <1000ft is a good snow marker if dew points, 850hpa's and Dam are marginal? Paul

It's not looking too bad here In Scarborough for the foreseable. Tomorrow looks likely snow showers. I was initially worried about coastal margins but 850hpa's at -8C from tomorrow with DAM around 524 with moderate PPN. There seems to be a slightly warmer sector on Tuesday though increasing marginality here but still wintry. After that no worries at all, just need the PPN! Wednesday evening could be interesting if that trough pulls off. Overall not too bad

Still dry here with a temp of +0.8C and dew point of -2.1. Temp also seems to be dropping as the front encroaches which is a good sign! The next problem which I didn't anticipate is amounts. The radar seems to show a gap over us getting only very light PPN.I just checked the forecast too and they are now forecasting a total of 0.6mm's here overnight!! I don't normally pay attention to the amounts but surely thats not a good sign! Nevermind, Let's hope what Lewis mentioned pulls off. There would be no worrying about margins then ey!!

Cheers Lewis! Will be interesting either way, Iv'e just had a new RH sensor sent for my weather station which worked fine, Just checked my dew point though and it's reading -175C again!!! Better fix itself for tomorrow night. The showers just north of us seem to have collapsed in on themselves and have stalled. Might get some flurries later maybe.

Theres a couple of nice looking showers around the Newcastle area at the moment that could hit here. I'll be radar watching again! As for tomorrow I feel a downgrade coming along! As far as I can tell the precipitation here will be mainly light though prolonged. I also see now the Dam will be at 534 and 850 temps of -4C. Seems the wrong side of marginal to me! Wait and see again I suppose! Anyone else have any views? Is it just a coastal thing again?

The rain seems to have cleared here now though the back end of it (about the last hour) turned increasingly wintry with snow just before it stopped. South of Scarborough on high ground may see some good snowfall as the cold air hits the back of the band of rain. Tomorrow evening and overnight seems to be shaping up well for a brief period of snow that could bring us a couple of cm's again.

So quiet in here! This might stir peeps a bit! Though it will be very short lived with temps behind the band at around 6-7C.
