  1. 2cm of fresh snow today. Current snow depth on snowboards; 7cm in garden and 5cm in nearby field.
  2. PV stands for Potential Vorticity, I don't fully understand myself. The PV is the purple blob at the top of the chart. If it moves towards Greenland, then the cold spell could be over because it will bring back the westerly winds...
  3. I canny remember that one! That ought to be a classic! Is it far enough north? Where's the PV going?
  4. I would love to see it and see it come off too!
  5. No, the easterly in 2005 came in late February.
  6. Light snow again. My records go back to 1988. I reckon this is the earliest snowy spell since November 1993? Anyone agree/disagree. I've had 5 snow falling days in a row, when was the last time this happened in December? 1981? This is the earliest snowy spell in December since when?????? December's 2000 and 1995 had snow on the ground for a week, but it came later in the month.
  7. 2100-0900 Max temp, 1.8C around 0100hr, so a slight thaw for a time. 2100-0900 min temp, -0.7C around 0800hr. Max temp since 0900hr, 1.4C Min temp since 0900hr, -0.1C Snow depth at 0900hr, 100% cover, 5cm in garden. With more of a south-west flow today, snow showers have been coming through the central belt and into Fife. The first one arrived around 1100hr. I was in Leven at the time, Leven is at sea-level by the Firth of Forth. The shower started off as rain but turned to wet snow before it cleared. Quite a heavy snow, 1330-1400hr, the snow settling too. Temp 0.0C at 1430hr. Another moderate snow shower around 1500hr. The showers are slow moving because there's hardly any wind. Snow depth at 1430h, 6.5cm to 7cm in garden and 4.5cm to 5cm in nearby field. Looking south this afternoon, I could see a majestic Cumlonimbus capillatus incus cloud slowly moving east over the Scottish Borders/Northumberland.
  8. Some clear skies overhead now, temp 0.1C and falling. Minimal, if any snow melt today. Did anyone see the Countryfile forecast earlier tonight? We should expect a northerly flow midweek with a recursion of fresh arctic air. So that should mean hard frosts and maybe ice days. The chart for Xmas day showed a brisk easterly across Scotland with wintry showers in the east. Of course, a lot can change. One things for sure, there'll still be snow on the ground in many places.
  9. Its warmer now than its been all day. Temp 0.5C. I can see the snow starting to thaw.
  10. Snow depth at 0900hr, 5.5cm in garden and 3.5cm in nearby field. A slight snow shower sneeked through the central belt this morning, 0930-1030hr. There was moderate snow in Kirkcaldy. Intermittent slight to moderate snow this afternoon. The snow seems to be falling from extensive NImbostratus, probably from the spreading out of Cumlonimbus cloud. Max temp 0.2C Min temp -5.0C at 2000hr yesterday evening.
  11. 2cm of fresh snow fell in 30 minutes today, 1320-1350hr. Total depth at 1500hr, 6cm in garden and 4cm in nearby field. Max temp 1.2C at 1300hr.
  12. Here's a couple of photos of the snow today. I don't know how to load them directly onto the post. The photos were taken at 13.38h, 13.42h and 14.03h respectively.
  13. Hello snowplough 3. Like you, I joined a few days ago. I would take either position. South-westerly winds could bring snow showers through the lowlands towards Fife. I would prefer an onshore E/NE flow because the showers would be heavier with hail.
  14. A band of heavy snow moved down from the north, 13.21h to 1400hr. 2cm of fresh snow fell in less than 30 minutes. The snow reduced the visibility to less than 500m at times. Big flakes at first changed to smaller/denser flakes. The temperature was 1C when the snow started and was 0.5C (wet bulb around 0C) when it stopped. A force 3 WNW wind veered North force 4 as the front went through. Snow depths at 1500hr - 6cm in garden, 3.5cm to 4cm in field near the house. Max temp 1.2C at 1300hr. Current temp -1C.
  15. Intermittent slight snow, 1415-1545hr. 100% cover, 2.5cm in the open to 5cm in sheltered areas.
  16. Hello Those snow charts would seem to back up the 'triple point' moving south tomorrow. The longer term outlook looks great. It stays freezing cold next week with a possible reload easterly in time for 2010. Hope this verifies. Frequent moderate snow/snowpellets after 2100h yesterday. There was slight blowing snow with gusty winds during these showers. It was still snowing at 0140hr, but fair by 055hr when i got up for work. Min temp -3.2C. Snow depth, 5cm at 0900hr. Intermittent slight snow, 1415-1545hr. Snow depths at 1500hr, still 5cm in garden but 2.5cm to 3cm on 'board' located in field near the house (very exposed site). Max temp since 0900hr, -0.3C an ''ice day'' at last.
  17. Heavy blizzard right now, this is more like it. Temp, -1C. Location: Baintown, 2 miles from Leven, Fife, 130m asl.
  18. Why can't we see each others locations???? On http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/ you can see the location details when you post.
  19. I don't like the BBC graphics. They spend far too long zooming around the country. I would prefer it if they showed the larger scale synoptic charts like they used to. And you no longer get up to date live radar shots.
  20. To get a proper Polar Low, you need 500hpa temperatures of -60C or colder. I don't think its cold enough?
  21. Looks like the triple point will pass over central Scotland/Fife early on Saturday. http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/brack1.gif The light snow/snow pellet showers continue here this evening. The snow cover has turned crunchy/crispy underfoot.
