  1. Way hey! That looks heavy and isn't far away. I hope that moves through here.
  2. It's getting colder and drier out there. Max temp since 0900hr, 3.7C early on. 1200hr, Tdry 3.2C, Twet 1.8C, Tdew -1C, rh 76% 1345hr, Tdry 3.0C, Twet 1.4C, Tdew -2C, rh 72% 1515hr, Tdry 2.8C, Twet 0.8C, Tdew -3C, rh 66% 1600hr, Tdry 2.9C, Twet 1.0C, Tdew -3C, rh 67% Wind dirn backing NE from ENE this morning. Average speed, 23mph (corrected to 10m level). So where's the bloomin snow?
  3. Today is disappointing and boring so far. The 0900-0900hr max temp, 3.6C occurred just before 0900h today. I recorded a 24mph ENE wind at 0900hr. However, it is starting to get colder, the temp was 3.2C at 1200hr and the dewpoint is -1C. The snow is thawing espcially on roofs. Snow depth at 0900hr, 8.5cm- an increase of 1cm from yesterday. There has been occassional light showers of sleet, snow and snow pellets this morning. The atmosphere seems to be too stable at present. The cumulus congestus clouds have a low liquid water content. A layer of medium cloud might indicate a temperature inversion at middle levels. I think -7C 850's are too marginal for snow, the easterly 2 weeks was colder- 850's of -10C. Leuchars is 12C warmer today compared to the same time yesterday! (-7C yesterday).
  4. Got a shower of snow flakes- at last! Temp around 0.5C.
  5. Moderate shower of snow pellets again. Temp dipped to -0.1C in shower. The showers are very short-lived with no snowflakes, yet!
  6. I worked in Edinburgh for 3 years, long enough to speak the language.
  7. Snow depth at 0900hr, 7.5cm. No thaw today. Got a dusting of snow pellets an hour ago.
  8. Not had any more snow since 1710hr. The snow pellets are still lying on paths and even my windowsill.
  9. Do any of you subscribe to 'Weather' magazine? There is an article about the Shetland Polar Low of the 4th February 2001 in Vol. 58, No.12, December 2003 issue. Some of the properties of Polar Lows are; 'upper cold-core vortices typically have central temperatures below a threshold of -42C at 500mbar and they move equatorward' ... sub synoptic scale...baroclinic instability... appear most often in the Norwegian Sea, Barents sea, north of the UK and north of Norway.
  10. The showers have arrived at 17.08h- small snow pellets, they have covered the icy pavements white. Temp up to 0.5C.
  11. I'm doing much better with this wind direction. I have a good land fetch, which happens to be covered in deep snow, plus i'm 130m asl. I was looking towards North Berwick and further down the coast towards Dunbar this afternoon, and there is no snow cover anymore, even on the hills.
  12. Howdy It's been freezing cold today. Still 7.5cm of snow lying. The ice on pavements and side roads is horrendous, not just here, but even along the prom in Leven. The wind is picking up from the NNE, it is reluctant to go into the NE. I have seen a few light snow showers moving up the Firth of Forth this afternoon. Max temp so far, 0.1C and now -0.1C.
  13. Snow depth at 0900hr, 100% cover of snow and ice, 8cm. The snow is covered by a hard layer of ice today.
  14. WHat a glorious day it is. I went walking onto the hills just to the north of here this morning. It's a different World up there. The snow is deep, between 15cm and 25cm. The branches of the fir trees are laden thick with snow and ice. In fact, some of the branches have bent over due to the shear weight of snow and ice on them and are lying across the forest tracks preventing access. One fir tree has snapped completely at the main trunk. Min temp, only -2.5C here last night.
  15. Jan 1987 must have been sub -10C. Probably Feb/Mar 1947 too.
  16. I can't wait. It's amazing the amount of snow that fell inland last night.
  17. Continuous sleet/wet snow since 2200h/26th until 1200h/27th. The rainfall equivalent is 16.0mm in the 24 hours up to 0900hr today. There was heavy sleet around 0130hr, which turned to snow. When I looked out my window at 0500hr, the ground was white with fresh snow. At 0730h, more sleet but it turned to wet snow for an hour. It settled on my windowsill briefly. From 0830h onwards, it was mostly moderate rain/sleet with sleet/wet snow in heavier bursts from time to time. I don't live far from you, plus i live higher up, and yet nowhere near 4 inches here. I don't understand it. O the higher ground, 1km north of here, at 200m, about 5cm settled overnight bringing the total average depth to 15cm.
  18. Lucky you. A couple of miles down the road, we only got an extra 1.5cm here. Snow depth at 0900hr, 8.5cm. Most of what fell here was sleet or wet snow.
  19. I saw the lunchtime BBC forecast. Fife and the central belt turned white with snow. Then, I saw this evening's forecast. They have a weather warning out for snow and ice across the 'southern Scottish Highlands'. Where are they about? Is the central belt been renamed the southern Highlands? (going by there graphics, it must be)
  20. A proper white Boxing day here! 7cm of snow on the ground. Sleety snow started at 1310, soon became moderate snow and then massive flakes at 13.37hr before quickly petering out.
  21. A white Boxing day too! Snow depth at 0900hr, 7cm in garden and 5cm in nearby field. The 10th day in a row with snow lying at 0900hr!!!
