  1. Wind holding steady at around 32mph just now. Not yet gusting to gale force up here. Temp up to 7.3C.
  2. By the way, in terms of winter safety on the hills it's good to get these brief milder incursions with rain to summit level. It allows the snowpack to consolidate, albeit briefly, and reduces the avalanche risk. The relentless piling-up of snow last winter without milder rain events is one of the reasons few of us could actually get up into the high hills. The avalanche risk was too great
  3. Warmer this morning but certainly not warm in that wind. Just went out to try and tackle a flat battery in 3.3C with a gusting wind and I can no longer feel my hands!
  4. Such a beautiful day today. Topped out at 3.3C and now back down to 0.2C. There is a bit of snow in the garden shadows that has survived from this morning and, incredibly, that's almost beaten last year's record!! Managed to get up onto East Lomond this afternoon and it was looking lovely and white to the west . I could see the hills of Breadalbane and upland Perthshire beyond and they were looking fantastic in the sunshine.
  5. Wahey! First subzero temp since Spring here just now. Dipped to -0.8C. Not cold by Central Belt standards but up here it never gets REALLY cold at night. I was up on Meall nan Tarmachan today and it gave good views over to Beinn Ghlas. Not much more than a dusting but it certainly looked suitably wintry today Really enjoying this seasonal weather, and good to see everyone on here again
  6. What a stunning couple of days, especially after all that murk last week. Coldest night since April on Monday/Tuesday here. Down to 0.7C....but still no proper frost and certainly no air frost. I camped up on Bishop Hill above Loch Leven last night and it was a tad chilly, but soooooo worth it!
  7. A really nice day today. Cool at around 6C, calm, with fog and murk coming and going. Felt properly autumnal. Managed to get up above the murk for a brief moment before the sun went down and the fog rolled in again.
  8. Filthy filthy weather. Filthy! And my mood isn't improved by receiving this photo from my pal in Ontario this afternoon
  9. Felicity Martin, who recently wrote an article on clouds in Scotland Outdoors magazine just tweeted, she thinks they are super undulatus. I've got no idea....but between the pair of you, some kind of undulatus appears to be the general consensus at this point
  10. Cheers Let's hope there's some snow on the hills when you get here! So far it's been a bit thin on the ground. I *just* managed to get my first snowy walk of the season last week on Bidean nam Bian, but the snow was only really above about 1000m. Funnily enough, my first snowy walk of 2013 was that same week last year......but there was considerably more snow than the same time this year.
  11. Funny clouds above the Lomonds this evening just before the light faded. I can't recall seeing anything like that before. Does anyone know what they are? PS- The cooler weather has brought me out of Netweather hibernation but still only one frost up here so far this season
  12. Cheers for sharing. It was a great trip.....although it ended in a very cold fashion having crossed the swollen outflow in Coire Ardair ;-)
  13. On Skye at the moment and it's been snowing in the heavier showers on & off all day.
  14. I've got my stats in for the three winter months here in the Lomonds. Thought I'd share how it stacked up with the last few winters http://benvironment.org.uk/post/79449265662/winter-2013-14-mild-wet-windy-and-snowless
  15. 'Ere you go. Piccie from yesterday in the Grey Corries
  16. Spent the day trotting along the Grey Corries.....with no footprints and nobody else about. Never had the ridge to myself before! Bonkers amounts of snow up there, such that it looks more like Alaska or the Alps. Normally-rocky ridges have been engulfed in wind-carved snow and are now knife edges, and there are enormous avalanches everywhere. Epic!
  17. Remember winter tyres aren't purely for snow. They're recommended for below 7C, especially in wet conditions. I tend to be out & about in the car in mornings and evenings and it's rarely been above 7C all winter, so I'll be keeping my winters on a wee bit longer. I normally take them off well into April unless the weather does something seriously weird.......but how often does THAT happen? :winky:
  18. Bonkers snow here about an hour ago.....but not settling. Snowing again now, mind. ...and this from the other night. Fife all lit up
  19. Reached 8.6C here this morning but has since fallen back to 5.4C, thankfully. Not willing to let go of the coolness just yet :winky: Anyway that makes this the warmest day here since 21st December.
  20. Still a few forlorn patches of snow in the garden.....and still not particularly mild. I'm starting to like this set-up if it means the hills get utterly plastered......assuming we can ever get up into them when there's no murk or gales or whiteouts of course!
  21. Ah. It's snowing and the ground is going white again
  22. Now, this doesn't happen often but....... Events conspired in my favour this morning and I was able to hitch a ride from Perth to Drumochter and back, via Lochs Garry, Rannoch and Tummel. Never seen Scotland looking so beautiful
  23. Back to sleet now. 1.6C. Had a grand time on Ben Vrackie today though, and my snowshoes got their first (and overdue) outing of the winter
  24. Best snow this winter! 1cm already and blowing onto the vertical surfaces. Down to 0.2C.
