  1. I guess this might be it. Thanks for the pointer. http://www.essexweather.com/latest_weather_forecast.html
  2. It has turned into a pretty poor day here, unless you like gloomy, with light rain type weather. I've also paid my quarterly power bill today; let's just say that I'm happy to be avoiding the cold next week!
  3. On reading about the very cold March of 1845 yesterday and doing some internet research (to see how our current weather situation might compare) I thought I’d found a pretty decent diary of events from that time. http://rawdonhistoricalsociety.com/rawdon/copping1845.htm Between threshing barley, chopping wood and worrying about his sick / wandering wife, I thought I’d found quite an account of a severe wintry spell affecting a Victorian chap’s life. I then thought, ‘I wonder where in the UK it was written?’ Obviously if it was an upland farmer’s account, then it’s not really too relevant… I then noticed the word ‘Montreal’
  4. Morning all. A bits and pieces of rain type day here today. I see it might be trending towards a dry cold then. It's a pity that I forewarned a few pub locals last night of snow possibilities on Monday / Tuesday next week. I did only say possibilities though, but feel I might need to go back to the pub tonight to downplay things properly.
  5. Just remember K that Spring is the most variable season, in terms of temperature, so snow is a possibility for a while yet. But also remember that the cold is fighting a losing battle against the strengthening Sun. A protracted cold spell in March has nowhere near the potential of the same in January and a freezing day (ice day) is pretty well unheard of in our parts in 4 short weeks...
  6. Excellent John! I did see that the first 20 days of March 1845 had a CET of less than zero (and I think the 13th March 1845 was the coldest recorded March day in England) but I bow to your greater research.
  7. I've got to ask, is there anything in the archive for March charts, comparable to those that are showing for next week? It must be almost as good as it can possibly get, from a cold lover's perspective.
  8. What a farcical report. I wonder if Jessica Bridge actually exists? I can't believe anyone from the Met Office would come out with that.
  9. Definitely the biggest downside for me is my heating bill. I'd be happy for people to have as much snow as they like next week and for myself to come back from my holiday just as it's all finished to be honest.
  10. Definitely time to take action to protect them. Sharp frosts look extremely likely, even if the snow ends up being not much of an issue.
  11. Still lots of uncertainty, but enough for people to start showing reasonable interest again. It'd be interesting if there was a prolonged period of snow embedded in this colder weather.
  12. I (personally) reckon simple binoculars would be better for this purpose. Maybe look at likely weather from a few days out and then organise when it looks good? We have a window of a few weeks, I think.
  13. Yes, I looked at the ensembles earlier. Possibly a freezing day (or two) for many if the scenario plays out.
  14. Possibly, but I'm hoping the worst of the snow will be through by then; I'm landing back at Gatwick then, so don't want any hassle with that (selfish, aren't I? )
  15. I might have a good chance next week, as I'll be a fair bit south of the UK. Maybe we should organise a SE Netweather gathering, on a clear night in the next month somewhere locally, when the comet should be visible (and definitely visible with binoculars) - said only mildly in jest...
  16. Yep, for a couple of days early next week. Morning all. Cloudy and mildish here.
  17. Tomorrow looks very mild too, from NMM, but a markedly different day from today, because of cloud cover. Oh well!
  18. Glad you found your answer. I thought you might be talking about something next week, rather than the obvious breakdown from the recent dry weather! Yes I saw that. Actually this week was the original planned holiday, but one of us couldn't make it. Thank God.
  19. Totally agree. It could give a notable snow event for March. There have certainly been historical major snow events in mid March, but it's all too far off, imho, at the moment, to get properly excited. Anyway, I won't be seeing it.
  20. I see a bit of hysteria is breaking out there. One poster is saying that the upcoming cold spell might make 63 blush. If he means March 1963, then it's likely to be true, as it wasn't a cold month - a bit chilly for the first 3 or 4 days and then average to above average in terms of temperatures. If he means the winter of '63, then oh deary me!
  21. Morning all! I'm sure I'm having the same sunny day as everyone here. So it's looking like possible / probable snow next week then here. I hope those that like it enjoy it. I'll be in warmer climes and very happy to avoid it personally. While I really like the early Spring warm weather, I don't like the tendency for very cold that can happen too, within a very short space of time. I'm now looking for some big convective Spring showers rather than a half hearted return to the freezer.
  22. I don't think it'll be anywhere near Hale Bopp; in fact you might need to know exactly where to look and have quite dark skies. I'm trying to find a site which shows its location by day as we speak.
